I Pelicans Defeat!1 iebcomiomi 63-57 Eugene Next Hurdle For Local Team By HALE SCARBROUGH McARTHUR COURT, Eugene, March 13 The Klamath Pelicans and Lebanon War riors virtually stole the show in the opening round of the state basketball tourney here lost night, and it wos the Pelicans who finally came out on top of a ding-dong last-ditch battle, 63 to' 57. By that win Klamath earned the right to meet the Eugene Axemen tonight at 8:45. Eugene was not particularly impressive in a 44 to 36 win over La Grande. The Pelican game wasn't in the bog until just a bare two minutes remained to be played in the final quarter. At that juncture Klamath was ahead, 57-56, and trying des perately to fend off a rising Lebanon roily. Joe Zarosinsky hod o couple of free throws coming and missed them both, but Cene Hoover lurking under the bosket, pushed the lost one in for two points, and a moment later Cene rammed in a cripple for two more ond broke up the game. Ray Craig added a push shot to finish the Pelican scoring, and Lebanon managed a 10rk on frro throws KUUJC .......... - , , . before the final gun, but dicln t . ba tournament, just like last threaten again. No more than six or seven points ever separated the two iranu ciurine the game, al- ihnimh the Pels started out to make it runaway they cored five times their first five shots, but then tightened up and couldn't hit for a nickel until Lebanon had tied the score at 14-H. Quarter count was 16-15 for Klamath. The Warriors almost ran way with the game in the sec ond quarter and Coach Wayne Scott, mass-substituting, had to wave in his first-string stal warts to plug the gaps. Even at that Lebanon was in the lead most of the ' way but had dropped off to 35-31 deficit at halftime. In that hectic first half the lead had changed hands seven times, and Lebanon was keep ing on even terms with the Pels with unerring foul line work 10 ringers in 12 tries. Big Jerry Thorn was the big gun for the Pels during that half, controlling most of the re bounds off both backboards. Lebanon never quite grabbed the lead in the second half, al though they managed to knot the count at ' 35-35 and again at 37-37. A one to three-point lead was all the Pels could ever see on the scoreboard, though, and it was a struggle to keep that. ' After the four-minute time out in the last period, the War riors started pounding up for one last try. Tall Paul Alley hooked in a pair, of long shots to set the stage' for Hoover's game-breaking tip-in and follow-up score. Alley, playing center, was the scoring star of the game, rolling up a total of 19, and speedy Jack Evans hit 16. For the Pels Hoover . counted 16. times and Thorn 11, although he fouled out early in the third quarter at a time when his ab sence made things look pretty black for Klamath. Ray Craig, who replaced Thorn, scored six, Joe Zarosinski 10, LeRoy Cole man; eight, and Clarence Buss man, eight. Apparent strong boy of the tourney thus far is Salem, in the same bracket with Klam ath. The Vikings, who hold one short decision over the Pels this season, stormed to a 63-35 win over Roosevelt high of Portland. If the Pels get by Eugene to night and Salem beats New berg, then Klamath and Salem will meet Friday night.-Looks like a rocky road ahead for the Pelicans. There are. however, six other teams Hood River, Marshfield, Sandy, Salem, Newberg and Klamath Falls who survived the first round of play, and many of the 5500 on hand last nieht liked Klamath Falls and Salem, both in Eugene's bracket. Klamath Falls, in fact, will give the acid test to the defend ing champions tonight. The high-geared Pelicans ran into a stubborn Lebanon team last night, but pulled out with three quick baskets in the closing min-, utes for a 63-57 win. ' The point total was just one short of the record 121 scored by Springfield and Oregon City in 1944. Klamath's winning baskets were made by Gene Hoover, Bob Redkey and Ray Craig. Hoover was high for the Pelicans with 18 points. Paul Alley of Lebanon had 19. Salem, winner of the Big Six league, and victor over Eugene in an earlier meeting, walloped Roosevelt of Portland, 63-35. and qualified for a game against Newberg tonight. Roosevelt, a highly regarded team, gave Salem scarcely any trouble. Cen ter Bill Hill led the victors with 16 points. Newberg came from behind an 11-9 first quarter score to defeat Hillsboro, 48-29. John Hoy led the Newberg scoring with 19 points. Eugene's win was a 44-36 af fair over a strong La Grande team. La Grande was within striking distance throughout the ! contest, but Eugene's slick ball- nandung was not to be match ed. In other games Marshfield high of Coos Bay romped past Molalla, 52-33, with Center Dick Mobley scoring 15 points, and Sandy eliminated Rainier, 50-40, with Bob Stcenson of Sandy scoring 20. Marshfield meets I Sandy today, the winner to play the victor of the Washington-Hood River contest. Tourney List For Thursday EUGENE.
