sauad Saturday night won the 1647 Basin basketball league
championship for Rickys Jewelers. Score in the showdown game
on Altamont court was 71 to 34, an unprecedented turn of event
In the unbeaten two-year cage career of the Chevrolet team.
Paul McCall, an All-American during his college days and
still great player, spelled the difference Saturday night. He
scored 18 points for the Jewelers in a display of classy shooting,
but the remainder of the Ricky lineup played Inspired ball in
completely taking the game

The Chevvles couldn't seem
to find the range and were
down 10 points before getting a
score. Marion Reginatto sank a
free throw for the first Ashley
point. First quarter ended, 18
to 7.
The second quarter was the
best of the evening for Ashley
but at that the Chevs were able
to knock only one point off the
Ricky margin and the score at
halftime was 30-20 for the Jew
elers. In the second half the Ashley
quintet did even worse at the
basket than in the first, scoring
just 14 points while the Jewel
ers looped la i.
, So the big trophy, symbolic
of Basin league championship,
went to the Jewelers for this
season. Two wins are need
ed for permanent possession.
The trophy was donated to
the league by Sam . Neslln,
Oregon Woolen stor mana
ger. Arthur Rickbeil gave each
member of the winning team a
miniature gold basketball.
League officials voted the Hal's
Sport shop team as the finest
in the league for sportsmanship,
named Paul McCall the best
sport in the city division and
Bill Hayes the most sportsman
like In the county.
Hayes is the star of the Hen
ley Town team which narrowly
missed out in the consolation
game Saturday. Consolation
honors and third place in the
final league standings were won
by the Tulelake Associated Fly
ers, 57 to 51, over Henley.

Bellotti, Lyle Kelstrom, Ernie

been a terrific demand for tick
ets, but KUHS officials have de
clined to depart from the cus

against their arch rivals, the
Medford Tigers, and that compe
tition in itself is usually enough
to overflow the spacious bas
ketball arena.
But the district 4 crown

series. District standings

single loss In league play, while
Medford has won 12 and lost

ball team won its first round
game in the state AAU tourna
ment in Portland last night, de
feating the Oregon City Legion
naires 38 to 37. The Chevvies
are idle today and meet an as
yet undetermined opponent Tues
day night.
Marion Reginatto was individ
ual star for the game, scoring 20
points. The Ashley squad, rep
resenting Southern Oregon in
the tourney, is staying at the
Imperial hotel.
In that game Oregon City led,
37-26, with four minutes to go.
Reginatto sank three field goals
and Swede Anderson collected
two to save the game for Ashley.
Mills Dropped
By Two Defeats
Mills school B basketball
team was eliminated from the
city tournament in Saturday's
games on Fairview court, los
ing two close ones. Riverside
and Fairview stayed unbeaten.
In the first round Riverside
beat Roosevelt, 22 to 8, and
David French scored 11 points
for the winners. Pelican topped
Mills 16-13. after trailing 8-4 at
halftime. Clifford Yantis count
ed 14 of Pelican's 18 points.
Fairview beat Fremont, 16
to 0.
Then in the second round
Mills was eliminated by Roosevelt,-
-12-10. . Riverside handed
Pelicans its first loss, 28 to 6.

Not Riot-Like
Coach Wayne Scott of the
Klamath Pelicans said today
that he had been questioned
considerably by basketball
fans concerning the two games
last week at Grants Pass, and
that he wanted to make it clear
that although the games were
fiery and hard-fought, they
were never at any time out of
hand.
. The first game, at least, has
been described as a near-riot.
Scott said that there was a
spell of booing and catcalls on
the officials' decision which
put Jack Orr, Caveman star,
out of that game but it was
quickly subdued and never got
out of control.
Scott said that both teams
were out to win and the of
ficials were calling their de
cisions close, accounting for a
great many fouls, but none of
the fouls were committed
maliciously.
