While the 14 trappers who had water grants on the lake each trapped his quota of 650 rats, tho sudden slump In the fur market early in the season knocked the bottom out of the trapping business. Quality furs brought $2 or better per pelt tins vear averaged around f 1.45. Half of each trapper's "take" goes to the government for the privilege of trapping the water area. Government furs will be sold, probably In April, at auc tion. These furs have been shipped to the Seattle fur ex change. Trappers have sold in dividually this year to a number of buyers in here at the peak of the trapping season. A total of 10,000 skins were trapped. Quality of the skins was good this season and the year was a good one for trappers with an open winter favorable to the business. , Officials of the fish and wild life service here state that rat numbers are decreasing with the decrease in the water area of the lake. Trapping is limited also to preserve enough animals to con trol marine vegetation in the lake. ' , 195,000 Trout Ready To Free : PORTLAND, Mar 1. Outside the victories for the two pennant-chasing squads, there is one other interesting Item on the district basketball scene to report. Central Point, winners of only two games this season, will not be in the league next season. The Point athletic directors have decided that Central Point Was out of its class, what with the enrollment there being less than 150, and will pull out. Should the enrollment of the school jump over the 150 mark next year the Pointers still will not play in district 4, but will play .off with the district cham pion if their chances look prom ising enough. Last night at Grants Pass the Pelicans skidded to three points behind (2-5) after about minute and a halt of play, but Jerry Thorn potted a couple of quickies to put the K-men In the lead. The Cave men never threatened much after that although they staged a beautiful four-period splurge for 21 points. But going' into the fourth quarter Grants Pass was 17 points behind and the Pelicans managed to pick up 18 markers during the final rush. Jack Orr, captain of the Cavemen, single-handedly out classed the entire cast for the night. Sliding in, ringers from almost anywhere on the floor, he totaled 22 points. Orr had fouled out In the third period of Thursday's game, but last night he didn't make a single miscue. LeRoy Coleman, floor leader for the Pels, rang up 16 points, Clarence Bussman had 13 and Gene Hover 12. Forty-one fouls were called during the game. In summer, when lakes are open and sportsmen are out In full battle gear for trout and better-known species, ling are seldom chanced upon. They have way of keeping to themselves In dark, myste rious levels, much deeper than those used by game fish. Ling prowl the cavernous bot tom recesses of Lakes Cle Elum, Katchcss, Keechelus, Chelan, Osoyoos and Palmer. In winter time, when Ice cov ers these lava-bound lakes, the ling travel closer to the surface. The technique of the hunt for ling Is simple, but productive. At not too frequent intervals holes are chopped through the ice and marked by slender sticks, anchored at the openings. Each day the set lines are baited with meat or small fish and lowered. Sometimes a thousand feet of line are floated out. sometimes a few hundred. They are baited at intervals. Here at Lake Palmer, where the ling have been taken weighing as much as 3 pounds, short lines seem to do the trick. Although they are commonly called "ling cod." Washington's ling are not true cod. Their flavor, however, la similar to that of the cod. Little Is known about the ting. They seem to do very little dam age to game fish, although they must eat smaller fish, since they are taken by such baits. There are several theories about their beginning. One of the most likely is they have in habited these waters since ..the lakes wore a part of running waterways which had access to1 Durocher's Sins Reflect In Diocesan Disapproval UVW VriDV Mnrph t (JM The Catholic youth organization oi me nroomjn. aiuw withdrawn from the Dodger Knot-hole club because Leo Du rocher, Dodger manager, In the words of the CYO's director, "Is ek.
