Oliver aald the plumbing opera tions would have headquarters at 228 N. 8lli. Councilman l.mulry asserted hla belief that Oliver wanted to go Into tho plumbing business to avoid pay ing plumbing costs while en gnilcd In construction. Council man Smith remarked that plumbing costs are high, and thnt aa - a result of his plan, Oliver could probably sell his houses cheaper to service men. Fire Chief Ambrose request ed permission to purchase hose, tires, gas masks, hose extender and other articles for the fire departmont. -'The. council ap proved Street matters received con siderable attention. Mra. R. I. McNutt of Uio Shippington dis trict told the city it ahould be ashamed of its part of the road connecting the Shippington dis trict with a county road across Hanks, Scott and Wocus streets. The county's part of the road is good, but the city's is deplor able, she averred. Feb. 25 P) Em ployers and labor, who have been at loggerheads over unem ployment compensation legisla tion, indicated a possibility of compromise today after a sen ate labor and industries com mittee hearing on a bill to re duce employers' payroll taxes by $1,500,000 a year. James T. Marr, secretary of the State Federation of Labor, said his organization would have no objection to reducing employers' unemployment taxes If the legislature passed labor's bills to fix maximum Jobless benefits at $25 a week for 26 weeks in any one year. The maximum now ia $18 a week for 20 weeks. James Cellars, Astoria fish packer representing employers, said the unemployment trust fund of $70,000,000 is so large that it should take care of any depression, so that a reduction in employers' taxes is Justified, Other labor news in the leg islature will be made thla after CLAYTON. The house passed 39 to 19 Monday and sent to the senate a bill to increase the size of the state highway commission from three to five members, with two from eastern Oregon and three from western Oregon. The senate roads and high ways committee will meet late today to try to work out a com promise on the bill to permit the state highway commission to build throughways, or roads with limited access. The com promise might be to permit throughway construction only between congested areas. This would meet the objections of the motor court owners, al though some opponents to the bill said they would accept nothing less than defeat of the bill. Federal Payroll Purge Planned WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 OP) President Truman ia studying a proposed program to purge gov ernment payroll, of disloyal and subversive employes. The program is in a report submitted to him earlier in the week by an inter-agency com mission. Mr. Truman appointed the group made up of represen tatives from various government agencies, and asked it to recom mend steps for removal of dis loyal employes. Red Cross Fund Campaign To et Under Way Monday All the wrinkles of the 1947 Red Cross fund campaign for Klamath county will be ironed out at a board meeting thia Tues day at 4 p. m., when chairmen of tho various committees will meet at headquarters, 518 Main. The campaign will start here on Monday, March 3, with goal of $25,000 for the county, ft is the aim of the board to reach this goal within two weeks and with a streamlined campaign program lined up for the co operation of the Klamath county people, It ia possible, Frank Sexton, 1947 fund chairman said today. A parade Monday morning with the KUHS band and Pep Peppers will start the campaign, stopping at the corner of 8th and Main for a special perform ance at noon, and proceeding on to the Wlllard where the kick off luncheon will be held.
