By JOY BIGGS Mrs. Harold (Jennie) Tolson of Jennie's cafe, proved herself a Oood bamariian yesterduy in the Kvaiis apartment fire disaster, serving coffee and doughnuts nil day to helpers arid fire victims. Jennie accepted no money for coffee and meals served to fire men, volunteer fire fighters. Herald and News stuff members and those who escaped in night clothes from the bluzing tipnrt ment house, Jutit across Main street from the cu.'e. Mrs. Margaret Hnmpcl, 410 N. 10th, employe of Jennie's cafe, was coming to open the cufc at 6 a. m., when she saw the flames and smoke. When she arrived, 10 pajama-clad residents of the burning apartment house fol lowed her into the restaurant and she built up the fire to warm the survivors and made coffee immediately. Mrs. Lucile Warner was the first to come in. She had arisen to go to ork at the Pelican cafe where she is employed as chef, wher. she heard the crash of glass and thought it was the garbage collector, she told Mrs. Hampel. When she opened her apartment door into the corri dor she aaw the smoke and flames, seized a coat to throw over her night clothes and es caped down the back way yell ing "fire" all the way. The reg ular entrance was already cut off by the blaze. Mrs. Hampel pnoned Jennie who called all cafe employes to assist in feeding the people who filled the restaurant, two men carried Mrs. Percy Evans from the veranda and brought her In to the kitchen where she stayed until a cab took her to the home of her lstcr-in-law, Mrs. Sidney Evans. Everyone behaved very calm ly, Mrs. Hampel reported, al though some broke down when their friends came for them. Most of the burned out apart ment residents were taken home with friends.
