When asked what he thought about the problem, Police Chief Orvllle Hamilton said that ho "was (old to keep the alleys clear, and ho was doing it." He added, 11 you let him park In the alley you'll have to allow others the same privilege." Uussman told the council that his problem was entirely dif- lereut irom outers and mat ne handled far more merchandise tonnage than any of the other merchants. Ho added that if the police made him conform to tho ruling he could close the alley entirely by loading and unload ing his own trucks In It. Mayor Eh Jstcndorf asked the council its wishes in the mat ter and was answered by Conn cllman Paul O. Landry that there "wasn't much the council could do on the matter." It was finally placed in the lap of the ponce committee tor study. Local Judge To Go To Portland Circuit Judge David R. Van denberg and three other Judges have been asslg..ed to the Port land bench for this month in order to speed up the work of the Multnomah court, according to wore' from Chief Justice George Rossman. The others ore Judges Forrest L. Hubbard. Baker: D. N. Mc Kay. Condon, and R. J. Green, La Grande. Judge Vandenberg is now in Portland for the second time (hit year. He spent three weeks there In January, then was here for a w,cek. Judge Charles II. Combs, who has a number of cases assigned in the local court, Is expected here late this week or early next week. Former Klamath -Man Arrested Edward C. Hobbs of Crescent City was arrested there last week, 24 hours alter he allegedly attempted to hold up the Home grocery on 11 street In tne coast town at the point of a gun. The holdup man is said to have fired two shots as Dewey Pollard of the grocery store reached for a knife. Hobbs was arrested 24 hours later and charged with the crime. City Engineer E. A. Thomas showed tho council a plan for tho proposed entrance to Glno Corninl's new drive-in at S. 6th and E. Main. The traffic safety committee had recommended the plan to tho council as being the lcBit hazardous method for handling the traffic entering and leaving the establishment. Car nini explained exactly what he planned to do and the council approved the plan and voted to accept tho committees recom mendation. A letter was read by Mayor Ed Ostendorf from the recrea. tlon committee asking that block 84 be withheld from sale until the committee has time to study it as a possible future site for a bait-ball park. The council agreed to withhold the land for B0 day. Police Judge Harold Franey reminded the council that num erous lost and stolen bicycles ar; piling up at the station and police arc getting anxious to get rid of some of the machines. Bids were also read for the purchase of a coupe and dump truck for the use of the city engineering department. The council passed tho bids on to the city engineer, mayor and finance committee for consideration. Tne city hall will close for Lincoln's birthday, February 12, and Wachlniiton's birthday, Feb ruary 22, the council decided, ruling that they are holidays. Only three councilmen were present at the meeting, Coun cilmen Angus Newton and A. F, Condrcy being absent. Thf: coast guard cutter On ondaga radioed today it was try ing to get another line aboard the vessel Arrow, wallowing In heavy swells three miles off Willnpa harbor. The Arrow apparently slipped its tow line last night and drift ed north. The message from the Onondaga did not specify, but the ship is four miles north of its previous reported position. The cutter said, however, that the Arrow Is in no danger, since the east wind is pushing the vesel away from shore. The Arrow was being towed from Seattle by an army tug to the Mothball fleet here when goyne, Hood River minister, for his defense of returning niesi confronted with discrimination. The award will be made at a New York City banquet April 13. He was one of three men named by the Thomas Jefferson awards for the advancement of democ racy for their work for "the democratic ideal."
