Doings At Big Council Hut

WASHINGTON, (JP) My note
book is full of horror this day.
I have just returned to my
camp from a day spent in the
great stone tepee where the two
main Washington tribes the
"democrats" and the "repub
licans" hold their councils.
Before describing the weird
sacrificial ceremony I saw that
has left me shaken with a name
less terror, I must tell something
of the council hut.
The elder chieftains of both
' tribes, the "senators." have pri
vate elevators to carry tnem 10
the different levels. They also
have a miniature railroad train
to whisk them underground to
a separate building where they

huge government huts, and 1

In any case he was compelled
to sneak into a machine which
magnified his voice to help the
senators detect any heresy. From
time to time unfeeling natives

I noted one further method

"the closed shop." At least I
gather they were discussing the
penalty 1 have not yet com
pletely deciphered i the strange
languages of Washington.
Senator Joseph Ball of Min
nesota objected to the "closed
shop" as unfair, but Senator
Claude Pepper of Florida said
he was in favor of it and added
significantly:

Later Senator Pepper assured

But I still don't know what

been looked iy forever in "the
closed shop."

SALEM, Jn. 31 Dr. Paul
C. Packer, state chancellor of
higher education, denied yester
day that many veterans are drop
ping out of the university and
colleges.
Addressing a joint legislative
ways and means sub-committee,
he said that fewer freshmen
have dropped out of school this
winter than ever before.
Dr. Packer said that the
board's $21,000,000 budget for
the next biennium isn't cent
too much, asserting it is "very
conservative." The board orig
inally asked for $25,747,716.
