Newspaper Page TextKlamath Potato Growers Ask Additional Spud Grade A ilale department of agricul ture grower hearing to deter mine the extent of demand for n additional potato grade for Oregon will be requested as the result of a meeting of the Klam ath Potato Growers steering committee at the Pelican party room Wednesday. ' Committee members heard Ross Aubrey, state-federal In ipector, explain federal grades and the California minimum standards law. The grade discussions are a re sult of difficulties encountered in making US No. 1 and No. 2 grades. Leafroll resulting in in ternal discoloration is occurring, and lots so affected cannot meet tolerances provided by grades now in effect. Tolerances for US No. 1 grade provide that not less than 6 per cent of the pack may consist of potatoes of which more than S per cent of the total volume of individual potatoes is internally discolored. The 6 per cent toler ance includes other defects such as soft rot. A like 6 per cent tolerance applies to US No. 2 grades, but the balance of the pack may consist of potatoes of which not more than 10 per cent of the total volume of individual po tatoes is internally discolored. A US commercial grade now : In effect in this area provides an 80 per cent US No. 1 pack in combination with 20 per cent No. 2's, with a 6 per cent tol erance permitted. The 80 per cent No. l's may have shallow discoloration up to 5 per cent. The 20 per cent No. 2's may be affected up to 10 per cent of volume. The steering committee rec ommended adoption of this grade after hearing Aubrey's opinion that one-half of the loss J affected- by browning could move under this grade. He 6aid' that any considers : lion of ' grades should be in fluenced by California's mini mum standards law. The Cali fornia law prohibits sale of po- j ' tatoes which are below these j minimum standards. These stan-! dards provide for 5 per cent tol-1 trance for potatoes more than j 20 per cent internally discolored. Not more than 20 per cent of the volume of individual pota toes comprising the balance of the pack may be discolored. Lots badly affected by browning can not move even under these low standards, Aubrey said. The steering committee recog nized the need for a hearing to determine the extent of demand for an additional grade but em phasized the need for improving the general quality of the basin crop. Emphasis was placed on selection of leafroll free planting 6tock as means of eliminating browning troubles. Early rogu ing of leafroll plants in com mercial fields was recommended as a necessary operation to pre vent occurrence of browning. Dusting for insect ' control was considered as a possible adiU tional measure to eliminate browning. Additional informa tion in this respect will soon be available from sample plantings from last year's dust plots. A market survey in coopera tion with Tulelake growers was favored by the steering com mittee. As an after-dinner feature of the meeting, the potato growers engaged in a discussion of state taxation and other public prob lems in a round-table led by Malcolm Epley, managing editor of The Herald and News. Oregon Fruit Alaska Bound PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 23 (P) An air cargo plane left for Alas ka today with 8500 pounds of Oregon perishalflo fruits and vegetables for delivery in An chorage. The plane, operated by Gener al Air Cargoes Inc.. is handling the cargo for the WY-East com pany, which shipped the first direct air relief cargo from Port land to the territory during the Puget Sound maritime strike. Metallurgists list six platinum metals as platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. Although all are rare and precious, only two. platinum and palladium, are commonly used in jewelry.- National Potato Letter- Holiday Spud Slump Eases, Oregon Ships 283 Carloads Grass Seed Planted In Forest Land The largest range reseedlng undertaking in the history of the Fremont national forest was accomplished in 1946 according to a tabulation prepared by for est officials. During the year 924 acres of range land were re- seeded by the forest service on lands found suitable for this pur pose. This reseeding was done In several different places on the forest, Twenty acres were seeded on Kogger meadow near the head of Dullard canyon: 40 ncrcs wero drilled in the ashes of u sagebrush fire on Hay creek near Drews vulley; 300 acres were broadcast o:i the ashes of tho, Wooley creek fire near Pais ley; and A55 nuri wero planted in a prepared seedbed at Coffee pot flat on the upper Chewuucun river. The principal sih-cIm of grass planted was crested wheat, timo thy and orchard grass. Previous reseeding trials on tho Fremont national forest have shown these specira to bo well adapted to the sites on which they wero used this year, By fnr the largest single re seeding project undertaken to date on the Fremont is the Cof feepot flat project. Sagebrush was removed from 357 acres of this area during 1048 by plow ing with a whratlund type disc tiller and the gruss need planted with a grain drill. In places where the soil was too rocky to use the plow a Dixie harrow was used.
