Baseball's Bonus Law Needs Chandler's OEC Crater Lake Trail Races Cecil Drew at the Gun store is extremely anxious to test public opinion on the subject of inaugurating annual trail ski races up at Crater lake to provide some competition lor the skiers of this area, ne would nice to get ine races started this winter, and the Gun store probably would put up the prizes and Cecil would do the organizing work. Anyone interested in races of the sort should drop into the Gun store and talk it over with Cecil, and maybe we can get some interesting snow competition under way pretty quick. The Unmentionables A letter from Mrs. Rose Bonfiglio. 1208 Mitchell, reached this desk a day or so ago asking for information concerning a subject that newspapers are prohibited by federal law from discussing. The subject is an annual Irish horse-racing event, attendant to which some persons come into possession of a lot of money and have their pictures taken by newsreel camera men. Most of the money is taken by the government in taxes. Mrs. Bonfiglio, under penalty of a year in the hoosegow, a fine of $10,000 (or both), I can't say any more, but if you do locate a ticket, check closely to see that it isn't counterfeit. They can be had here in town. Aiken's Choice A Surprise The selection of Jim Aiken for Webfoot football coach cer tainly was a curveball thrown past a lot of us who had done some speculation and tub-thumping for favorite candidates. Aiken hadn't even been mentioned previously. Down at Reno Aiken ran a wide-open game, had the best passing squad In the country this past year, and put Nevada away out in front of the other schools in the mountains. Maybe he'll bring some of his flashy play ideas to the university, but the rain and mud he'll have to deal with at Eugene. Corvallis and Portland can be figured on to put a crimp in a lot of that. Oh, Lawd! Please No Sales Tax There Is a movement on foot in the legislature now to legalize gambling in Oregon. Legalization of gambling should bring in enough money so as to make a sales tax which is really one pain in the neck unnecessary. Any legislators reading this col umn will please note which side Scarbrough is on. Sales taxes bring in a lot of money, but it's a painful process, both for buyers and sellers, and it costs a lot to collect. The OPA drove businessmen screwy with investigators, but just wait until government greyhounds start prowling around to see if you're collecting that mill on each nickel. We have entirely too many taxes now better look for some income that doesn't bear the tax label. KUHS Jayvees Slide Past Mt.
