Marshall Faces First Problem In Pole Elections WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 (P) United States disapproval of tin Polish national election! next Sunday became an evident certainty today. Thus one of Gen. George C. Marshall's first problems as secretary of state may be to decide what to do about it The Polish situation which finds Russia lined up with the communist controlled government at Warsaw against Britain and the United Statesis one of three in eastern Europe that threatened to prove troublesome for Marshall. The other two: 1. An apparant effort by tha communist minority In Hungary to smash tha power of tha moderate Small Hold ers party, 2. Moves by tha commu nist government of Marshal Tito in Yugoslavia to eatab ' lish soma kind of economic bloc in the Balkans. What makes the political sit uation in eastern Europe par ticularly delicate at the mo ment is the fact that the Bal kan peace treaties are soon to be signed and, it is expected, quickly ratified. These treaties provide for the withdrawal of Russian occupa tion troops from Romania, Bul garia and Hungary. In addition they impose a number of other provisions designed to restore the independence of the coun tries and to guarantee equality of trade opportunities through out the Balkans. The Russians thus appear to be faced with a need to con solidate their position in east ern Europe before the effec tiveness of the peace treaties greatly curtails their freedom of operation there. ' The issue as seen by officials here is only slightly different In Poland. The men who will be advis ing General Marshall on. such matters regard the Polish elec- t i o n contest essentially as a ; struggle between (1) the com-1 m u n i s t dominated coalition seeking election as the regular government and (2) the opposi tion Polish peasant party which. United States diplomats con tend could poll a clear majori ty in a free election. Recently the United States sent a, series of three notes list ing charges of political oppres sion of the peasant party. War saw ignored them until yester dav. Then the answer made clear that Poland was rejecting completely the American de mands for a change in the elec tion system. Classified Ads Bring Results. Illegal Mail Being Sent Postmaster Burt E. Hawkins reminded Klamath Falls citizens that there are many articles be ing sent through the mail that are prohibited, and that the mail ers of such articles are leaving themselves open to severe pun ishment for such mailing under the postal regulations. Hawkins added that he believed much of the forbidden material was be ing sent by persons who did not realize that they were breaking any law. Hawkins named off a brief list of general items which are pro hibited in the mails. Among them were intoxicating bev erages, inflammable material such as matches, lighter fluid and combustible chemicals, am munition and all other explo sives, firearms which are capable of being concealed on the per- Alotka Trad Expansion Talked PORTLAND. Ore., Jan. 16 (if) Businessmen hero met today with George Sundborg. manager of the Alaska development board of Juneau, to discuss expansion of trade between Columbia river ports and the territory. Sundborg, a former Portland resident, is scheduled to confer later with Seattle shippers on complaints by Alaska merchants against demurrage charges levied on cargo held at Puget Sound ports during the maritime strike. One ship loaded relief cargo from Portland during the tie-up. City Commissioner Beefs About Pay PORTLAND, Jan. 18 ( Three city commissioners were complaining today because they did not receive their full $5000 salary in 1946, but the fourth was very unhappy because he received his salary plus a bonus. Those shorted were out 14 to six cents, but Commissioner Kenneth L. Cooper said the $3000.05 total paid him a plus five cents put him into a higher income tax bracket.
