New Jersey Pier Fire Loss High WEEHAWKEN. N. J., Jan. 8 W) A general alarm fire, fanned by high winds, roared through two freight export piers of the New York Central rail road today, blanketing the Hud ' ion river waterfront opposite midtown Manhattan with dense clouds of smoke. Damage was expected to run into several millions of dollars, railroad spokesman said. Five railroad employes were injured when the blaze started on pier 3, a quarter mile north of the West Shore railroad passen ger terminal. Pier 3 was de stroyed. New York Central Fire Chief Ernest L. Wevill said he believed the blaze was started by the ig niting of gas formed when a drum of carbide sprang a leak, and the carbide came into con tact with water. A fleet of three New York City flreboBts. augmented bv 20 rail road tugs and land apparatus from Weehawken, West New York and Union City, battled flames on pier 4, to the north of pier 3. Thousands of New York-bound commuters of the West Shore railroad watched the billowing smoke and spurts of orange flame shoot hundreds of feet into the air. Railroad spokesmen said the piers were loaded with general merchandise, including flour, automobiles ' end carloads of limestone, destined for ships in nearby New York harbor. There were 50 railroad cars of freight on pier Z hen the fire broke out, and all but about ten were removed. All of the 33 freight cars on pier 4 were re moved to safety, the railroad re ported. A railroad spokesman said pier 3 was insured for $2,950,000, and insurance on pier 4 was $2,000,000. Helicopter To Search Rainier McCHORD FIELD, Jan. 8 W) A Sikorsky R-5 helicopter was to take off today, weather per mitting, on initial flights around Mount Rainier in its search for a marine corps transport plane, missing since December 10 with 32 aboard.
