Shuffle Scraps 4-Loop Playoff Pelicans Placed In Football League With Medford, Half-Dozen Others Bv HALE SCARBROUGH The shuffle which scrapped the out-of-date four-team playoff for the Oregon prep school football championship has dropped Grants Pass and Hoseburg from the circuit traveled by Klamath Falls, Ashland and Medford and added five other teams on this Starting next fall an eight-district setup will be put Into play. .1 makina necessary quarter-final Ducks Open With Texas A nine-game football schedule will be played by the University of Oregon Webfoots next fall, with Texas and the University of San Francisco becoming new opponents for the Ducks. Stanford is also booked, but Southern Cal, California and College of the Pacific are not on the '47 Duck slate. UCLA's game is at Los Ange les, but it became apparent at the last PCC officials' meeting that the southern teams of the loop were becoming extremely reluctant to schedule certain of the squads in the northern divi sion because of bad weather, bad fields and small stadium ca pacity. The blast which was put on Portland's Multnomah sta dium by Washington's Pst Welch and other coaches also shows up in the Wtbfoot schedule. The Ducks will play two games at Portland, vone in September and the other in October. The complete schedule fol lows: Sept. 27 Texas in Portland. Oct. 4 Nevada in Eugene. Oct. 11 UCLA in Los Ange les. Oct. 18 Washington in Port land. - Oct 25 San Francisco in Eu gene. Nov. 1 Idaho fa Eugene. Nov. 8 Washington State in Pullman. Nov. 15 Stanford at Palo Alto. Nov. 22 Oregon State in Eu gene. PrepCagers Renew Battle After a partial layoff over the noudays, prep scnool oasKetcail in Klamath Falls and Klamath county gets started again this week. The KUHS Pelicans, who have won nine and lost one in pre season games, start the southern Oregon conference ball rolling Friday night with a game here with Ashland. The Pels will also play the Grizzlies on Saturday.' Sacred Heart Academy's fine team goes up against a tough opponent tomorrow night in the underrated Chiloquin Panthers. That game, a return event of the county casaba league, will be held in the Fairview gym. Start ing at 7:30, A and B contests will be played. The Merrill Huskies step out of the league slightly tomorrow night to take on Lakeview's class A Honkers in a Kings-X tilt at Merrill. The county league's week-end schedule calls for Bly at Sacred Heart, Henley at Merrill, Bo nanza to take the long trip to Gilchrist and Chiloquin at Malin. asses-- t- fi; 10 & BE PREPARED! The change was made by the Oregon High School Activities association in hopes of eliminat ing some of the trouble spots of the current system. For instance, under the old four-district plan, Roteburg is in the same conference with the Pelicans, but the two never meet. Bend hasn't been in the same league, and the Pels play Bend every year. The old district 3 was really the carbuncle of the state, in 1946 McMinnvllle was chosen by ballot as the division reoresenta tive, when Central Catholic and Seaside, in the same district, were undefeated. Under the 1947 arrangement the Klamath Falls Pelicans will compete on the gridiron against Medford, Ashiand, Burns, Lakeview, Bend, Prine ville and Redmond. The Pels may not play all those teams, but will figure against them on percentage of conference games won and lost The Pelicans will probably still play Grants Pass. Salem and Grant high as outside contests, and most assuredly Medford, Ashland and Bend will be on the schedule. Eugene probably won t. The new system will probably mean an earlier starting date for the elimination contests, but the championship game more than likely will be played the last week in November at Multnomah stadium. Jan. 6 () Blazin Ben Hogan, the smart ones said, had the Los Angeles Open tucked in his back pocket today as firing commenced on the final 18 holes of the 72-hole tour over Riviera Country club's tricky course. The Hershey, Pa., sharpshoot er, at 208 for the first S4, had a two -stroke bulge over little Toney Penna, Cincinnati, who was making his game.st try for a major tournament win. Penna, who wasn't even in golfdom's top dozen money win ners in 1946 and hasn't copped a big tournament since Hector was a pup, if then, shot near sensational golf yesterday to post a one-under par 70. and shave two strokes off Hogan' previous lead. But close observers gave him only an outside chance to over haul Hogan, the 1946 king, who usually gets steadier as the going toughens. Hogan, however, might have to shoot better than yesterday's 72 to make his first 1947 start a winning one. Four Prelims Bid Action Four preliminaries, which should be good in their own right, are overshadowed by the Ursal Snapp-Joe Woods 10-round main event bout on tomorrow night's armory boxing card. The quartet all are of four rounds scheduling, and the semi windup is slated for five heats. Bill Berry and Joe Mitchell, both of whom lost their only previous local 130-pound bouts by second-round kayoes, are paired for the opener, and two other lightweights are put to gether for the second bout of the evening. They are the very popular Bobby Barney, who has won two and lost three previous fights. and Gene Gist of Redding. Eddie Johann, a good middle weight from Redding, goes in with a newcomer, Mel Weaver, in that bracket and Gene O'Neill and Bob Eastman are paired In the top four-rounder, also middleweight. Monte Montgomery and Ralph Weiser are on the docket for a 4ive-round welterweight slug fest and the stellar attraction is the return fight between Snapp and Woods. k Survey Shows Responsible For 21 Deaths NEW YORK. Chains Broken ... Oregon Loses; Only Eight Teams Unsullied NEW YORK, Jim. 6 (P) When Adolph Rupp of Kentucky, Hank Iba of Oklahoma A and M and other big titne college basketball coaches predicted early this season that no major quintet would survive the campaign without a defeat, little did they realize what excellent prognosticators they were. With the cage season barely four weeks old and Just about getting over the preliminary stages as the teams prepare tor conference play, only eight out ins nave managed to retain un sullied slates. Not even Iba and Rupp, whose own teams, inci dentally, have failed to stand up under the pressure, thought that so many teams would tumble out of the select group so fust and so early. It would come as no surprise if the remaining unbeiitons were to fall by the wayside before the season is much older. The Cougar triumph came after the Ducks had posted an impressive pre-season record oi 12 straight wins and captured the opening tilt "of the series. As a result, Washington, with its twin win oveY Idaho, headed the race today with Washington State and Oregon in second place. Washington trounced tne defend ing Idaho titllsts 62-41 Saturday night.
