Strict Ethics Code For Athletics Needed LOS ANGELES. Jan. 3 UP) The time has come, In the avowed belief of Commissioner Kenneth L. (Tug Wilson of the Western conference, for the nation's colleges to take stock and adopt a standard code of ethics in dealing with athletes. Terming the forthcoming meeting in New York of the Na tional Collegiate Athletic association "the most important in the history of the NCAA." Wilson declared: "We have reached the cross-roads. The colleges can either leven off and operate as they should, or they may get into trou ble. We must set ud a policy whereby a kid will choose a school for its educational value, rather than the school choosing a kid for his athletic ability." Colleges, he said, have pros pered under the true- amateur operation and must continue to follow that pattern. "If we don't we invade the professional field, where we don't belong," he declared. His predecessor, the late Maj. John Griffith, once sent out a form letter to most of the col lege presidents in the country, outlining his views on threatened professionalism and asking for opinions on what should be done to correct abuses. The presi dents displayed little interest, Wilson recalled. "He received only 22 re plies," Wilson continued. "Re cently I sent out the same type of letter. I received nearly 200 replies. This shows that college presidents now are aware of the problem and are determined to take action needed.' Wilson said some 28 confer ences will be represented in New York January 6-8, and independ ent schools, including West Point and Annapolis, have in dicated they will cooperate with the NCAA. Notre Dame has been invited but Wilson said he had not been advised whether it will participate in the meeting.
