TNvaaoAY, Ih, I, Mt, r H, Fighting lllini Stuns Pasadena Crowd Georgia Staves Off Underdog Tarheels Bruins Take 45-14 Licking In Tournament Of Roses NEW YORK, Jan. 2 W) Sports talk today centered around Illinois' almost incredible feat of knocking off a hitherto un beaten UCLA eleven 45-14 before 02,000 stunned onlookers at Pasadena's Rose Bowl. It was by far the largest single game turnout of 20 bowl battles the largest number ever which treated a total turnout of 440,000 fans to 77 touchdown runs and passes. The victorious Georgia, Rice, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma,. Ha waii and Delaware teams all contributed to this New Year's dis play of fireworks, but the game that will be remembered longer than any of the others is the 33rd edition of the Tournament of Roses. Inaugurating the Big Nine-Pacific Coast conference five-year plan, the underdog Illinl scored In every period except the third to register as many points against the bewildered Bruins as the Californians had suffered from their last seven opponents com bined. In only two other Rose Bowl games have teams scored more points. Michigan, in the classic's inaugural In 1002, scored 49 points in blanking Stanford, and Southern California registered 47 points against Pittsburgh in 1930. Coach Ray Elliot's "little boys" rolled up 245 yards via land and air with Buddy Young, speedy negro star, scoring two touch downs, and Julie Rykovich, Paul Patterson, Perry Moss, Russ Steger and Stun Green tallying the others. Tha big thrill, however, was provided by UCLA s 143 pound tailback. Al HoUch, who raced a kickoii back 103 yards for a touchdown, the longest and only on from a kick off in Rosa Bowl competition. A capacity crowd of 73.000, which came to watch a scoring duel between Georgia's All-America Charley Trippl and North Carolina's Freshman Charlie Justice, saw the undefeated Bull dogs came from behind to hano the Tarheels a 20-10 lacing in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia scored all its points in the second half. The duel between Trippi and Justice never materialized, since Trippi gained but 54 yards in 14 rushes and Justice only 31 in 17 attempts. Trippi complet ed two passes in seven attempts, .netting 70 yards. One of his tosses brought a score, but an other was intercepted to set up Carolina's score. Justice threw only one pass, completing it be hind the line for a five-yard loss. An 83-yard drive, climaxed by Halfback Carl Russs 25 yard run and lateral to Hugh Keeney, who ran another 25 yards for a touchdown, and a safety, all In the first period enabled Rice to blank a rugged Tennessee team 8-0 before 38, 000 Orange Bowl spectators at Miami. Arkansas, outgained 2 7 1 yards to 54, balked three drives inside its own 10-yard line to gain a scoreless tie with power laden Louisiana State in the 11th annual Cotton Bowl game at Dallas before 38,000 fans. The Razorbacks once halted the Tigers on the two-yard line, an other time they threw Louisiana back from the four and still an other time they wriggled out after being pushed back to the eight. With FuUback Eddy Davis scoring three touchdowns and Bill Wallace one, Oklahoma overwhelmed North Carolina State 34-13 before 17,000 in the second annual 'Gator Bowl game at Jacksonville. Fla. In other bowl tilts, Cincin nati triumphed over Virginia Tech 18-6 in the 12th annual Sun Bowl game at El Paso, Tex.; Delaware increased its victory ' string with a 21-7 win over Rollins college of Winter Park, Fla., in the Cigar Bowl; Catawba overpowered previous ly unbeaten Maryville college 31-6 in the inaugural Tangerine Bowl at Orlando, Fla., and New Mexico and Montana State bat tled to a 13-13 tie in the first San Diego Harbor Bowl. Salem Writer Defends Duck Charges that University of Oregon coaches don't get coop eration from the atnietic Doara and alumni and that the Eugene campus lacks spirit, prompts Fred Zimmerman of the Salem Capital-Journal to ask, "What about Howard Hobson and bas ketball?" He writes, "They have given Oregon national recognition in a field that is highly competitive. Give the Webfoot institution a football coach who can beat Ore gon State at least two out of every three years and he will win the backing of all university factions. "Failure to keep anywhere near even with the Beavers has been the basis for most of the griping against the coaching staff. Most high school seniors prefer to Join a winning aggrega tion and that is probably the real reason Coach Lon Stincr at Ore gon State has been successful in attracting No. 1 gridders. Un doubtedly a live alumni group plays an important part, but ability to produce keeps the wolves at a safe distance." Hot Play In Cold Weather HOUSTON, Tex., Jan. 2 Ov icide weather apparently means nothing to St. Mary's and Georgia Tech. The Gaels of California and the Engineers of Georgia, in clashing here yesterday in the Oil Bowl, ignored rain, sleet and low-30 temperature to stage one of the wildest tilts ever seen in this southwestern area where grid teams are noted for razzle dazzle. Tech smothered St. Mary's 41 19. but the 23,000 teeth-chatter-ing fans were pleased to see the teams fulfill the predictions that the tilt would be a high-scoring, ball tossing affair. Huskies Have String On Home Hardwood MERRILL, Jan. 2 The Mer rill Huskies, defeated, in their only two conference basketball games, come to grips with the Malin Mustangs tomorrow night on the Merrill court.
