Christmas Day Promises To Be A Dreary One For The People Of The Have-Not Nations Despite Luxuries LONDON. Dec. 21 fP) There will be Christmas gaiety and iven plenty in Europe for those irvio can pay. But lor Europe's aungry, destitute multitudes there is no room in the inn. Though the shadow ol war has ' Ulted. the dreariness of cold hearths and bare cupboards re mains. And for tie have-nots of the have-not and defeated na tions Christmas will be just an other day. For those who are not de prived by war, whose purses still are intact, Christmas prom ises to be what it always has been a day of festivity. The markets of the continent al cities are bulging with lux uries that seem out of place to the wage earner but are shop ping neavens to the ciouveau riche. But costs are equivalent to boom-time Christmas bonuses. In Paris, windows are stuffed with appealing scarves, purses, jewels, silken underthings, fur coats, perfumes and other rich gifts, but prices are fantastic. And many child can only stare and long for pretty toys. Paris foods-hops, too, are bur dened with delicacies silver wrapped pate de foie gras, at $9 to $14 a pound; turkeys and geese at up to $30; and champagne at prices which are not even men tioned out loud. Christmas trees are plentiful. Flowers are a sight to see, but prices are soaring and a bou tonniere for Christmas will cost as much as one dozen roses in November. Night 'clubs and large restaurants will have special shows for those who want to toss away a month's salary in a night Rome presents the paradox of stores bursting with luxury goods, while most of the capi tal's masses would be content with an extra ration of spa ghetti. Italians fortunate enough to have lire can buy, but prices go up and the lire goes the other way. The scarcity of fuel in Hol land has all but blacked out shop windows where expensive and indifferently made toys are dis played. Even potatoes, fish, vegetables and game, which is unrationed, arc more expensive than before the war. Turkey costs about $2 a pound. Thanks to the occupation forces, Christmas for German children will be a little more on the merry side this year. Most of the German children probably would rather have a good square meal, anyway, than a "made in Germany" toy. Germany's adults, too. are ben efitting from allied generosity. The Russian occupation authori ties are distributing 900,000 bottles of German-distilled vod ka in Berlin during the holidays and tie French are passing out 100,000 bottles of German cham pagne. The Americans are making available 290 tons of processed fruits and fruit juices for chil dren and the British are contri buting 145 tons of sweets for a merry Christmas in Berlin. In Britain the outlook was for continued austerity, but English men could look forward to shar ing about 11,500 tons of turkey, puddings, sweets and imported fruits. Rationing still Is severe, but largely respected, so that DIME i At The Sign Ol The RED ROOSTER Klamath's Finest S14 Klamath At. Open 5:30 a. m. to 10 p. m.
