Richard Price of Portland, head of the Crater Lake Lodge comDany. is expected here Thurs- day to meet with Charles Fyock who will be in charge 01 tpe Man Found Dead In Bed Cornelius Thomas Desmond, 19, was found dead in his bed at S33 S. 4th early this morn ing by a neighbor, William Gus tafson. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Desmond was a mill worker and had lived in Klamath Falls for about 16 years. He was re tired and lived on an old age pension. Gustafson had bought some medicine for the man yester day and was taking it to the ntbtn this morning and couldn't st In. He looked in the window and saw Desmond in bed and call' d the police. VDeputy Coroner Marvin Al bee said that Desmond had ap parently been dead since about 10 o'clock last night. He was originally from Brasater Falls, N. Y., and had no known rela tives. Quiet Requested For Nervous Dog VANCOUVER, B. C, Dec. 10 (CP) It shouldn't happen to a dog but tt did. An unidentified woman asked police today to try and keep the kids in her neighborhood quiet Reason: "The boys in my neighborhood are so noisy my dog suffered a nervous break down. He spent 10 days in the hospital recuperating and though he's been home three days now, the noise continues and I fear he is to have an other one." The park service has given the lodge company a go ahead signal to operate for the present under a general contract and as this winter's operations are of a new type of service, temporary ap proval has been granted. T. C. Parker, assistant park superin tendent, said Tuesday that be cause the service is new to the park set-up, it is taking longer to approve tne plans but that the lodge company will go ahead as originally scheduled. Just what accommodations will be available will be announced before Saturday, Six inches of new snow has fallen in the park in the past 24 hours and depth Is now 54 inches. Skiing is only fair but when the new fall packs, the sport is ex pected to be excellent. Roads are in fine shape, Parker said. and no chains are required. Min imum was 21 degrees, maximum S3. Snew was reported in all higher elevations in the moun tain area this morning. Roads were well sanded, however, and hazardous conditions of a week ago have been eliminated. It was snowing slightly this morn ing on the Willamette pass from Salt Creek falls east over the mountains. On Sun pass of The Dalls-California highway, road side snow was given as 28 inches deep and the highway frosty but sanded. Conditions on the Green Springs highway were reported as similar with a minimum of 29 degrees. 11 Bodies Recovered From Blasted Mine WHITEHAVEN. Eng., Dec. 10 (Jt) Rescue workers reported today the recovery of the bodies of 11 men killed in an explosion in an undersea section of the United Steel companies' Lowca mine and said there was little hope that any of the four still missing survived. Kescue crews, wearing respir ators to guard against black damp and working in water knee deep, moved tons of fallen rock and coal in an effort to reach the men still unaccounted for. Phono SS01 New Fish Bill Discussed PORTLAND, Dec. 10 WV Commercial and sportsmen's groups met here Monday with the state fish commission and the fisheries Interim legislative com mittee to discuss a fish bill to go before the next legislature. The bill, which would increase fish commission authority over commercial operation, is partly supported by Columbia river fish ermen They propose, however, that it should be revised to give the commission less control over gear. Carl Stanton, Roseburg Rod and Gun club, declared at to day's hearins that fish commis sion enforcement is not satisfac tory, and urged that steelhead be considered game fish In all streams except the Columbia. John V e a t c h, commission chairman, appealed to sports men and commercial groups to band together on a fish pro gram. He warned that continued wrangling would prevent the commission from obtaining au thority to regulate fishing and result eventually in destruction of the supply, CPA Approves Phone Permit The civilian production ad ministration Monday approved an application for construction of a $107,000 addition to the Klamath Falls office building of the Pacific Telephone and Tele graph company. Plans have been drawn for the addition and work will pro ceed as soon as possible, accord ing to Charles E. Seavey, man ager of the Klamath Fslls branch. The structure stands at Pine and 8th and the addition will include another floor and also additional space on that cor ner which is not covered by the present building. The application of L. F. Greg ory, Klamath Falls building con tractor, for a $5435 building, was denied by CPA. Cigarette Starts Atlanta Fire ATLANTA, Dec. 10 (P) The Atlanta Journal said Monday three officials were believed in "general agreement" that a cig arette carelessly thrown into a mattress stored in a third floor hallway started the Wlnecoff hotel fire that killed at least 120 persons. Cocktail hour is from 8:30 to 9:30 p. m. in the blue room, with dancing .until 11:30 p. m., when a buffet supper will be served. All nobles and their ladies are invited to the annual affair. Invitations have been extended to the new members of Klamath Falls and Roseburg. Man Knocked Down By Truck O. L. Daniels. 64. of 120S1 Pine, was knocked to tie pave ment and slightly injured late Saturday when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Carl E. Baker, 22, of 2228 Home, at Main and llth. Baker is a driver for City De livery Service, and was making a turn off Main onto llth, when Daniels stepped off the curb in to the path of the truck. He was not seriously hurt and declined to be taken to a hospi tal. Accident Victim's Estate Probated YREKA, Calif., Dec. 10 Pe tition for probate of will in the estate of the late William B. Franklin of Macdoel was filed in superior court here Decem ber 4 by William G. Hagelstein of Dorris. Franklin died November 10 from injuries received a few days earlier in an automobile collision at a road intersection just outside Macdoel. The estate involved does not exceed $12, 000, according to the petition. Restaurant Meeting Slated The Associated Restaurants of Oregon will hold a meeting Tues day at 2 p. m. in the chamber of commerce, for the purpose of organizing a branch among res taurant owners in Klamath Falls. In a letter received last Fri day from the organization local restaurant owners were inform ed of the meeting. The letter stated that, "at that time we will discuss our state restaurant asso ciation and the possibilities of forming a Klamath Falls chap ter." The letter was signed by Roscoe E. Watts, field secretary for the association. Japanese Tangerine Oranges Arrive VANCOUVER, B. C, Dec. .10 MP) Fifty thousand boxes of Japanese tangerine oranges first to be seen here' since the outbreak bf hostilities in 1941 are expected to arrive from Japan Dec. 31, dealers said today. City Will Integrate Duties Of Park, Recreation Boards The city "park board and re creation committee will bo com bined after the first of the year. according to Mayor Ed Oaten dorf, to bring the closely related function of parks and recreation under one Jurisdiction. This change was authorised by the people at the November election in a measure which brought the park board into the city family. In the past the mem bers had been appointed for life by the circuit Judge. Mayor Ostendorf said that six members of the combined board would be selected, with the con. currence of the council, soon after the first of the year. Two would be appointed for two-year terms, two for four years and two for six. Because of the budgetary setup of the city, the new board will handle two separate funds, for parks and recreation, and have the job of deciding which Siskiyou Jury Asking Ban On Slot Machines In County The 1948 Siskiyou county grand Jury, in session at Yreka, Calif., this week-end asked the county supervisors to pass an ordinance banning slot machines in Siskiyou county. The grand Jury, through the foreman, Earl Barnum, advised the supervisors that it "in tended to do more than go through the motions of a grand jury session" and expected its recommendations to be acted on. Embargo Lifted Here Klamath folks breathed a sigh of relief early Monday with the lifting of tie five-pound em bargo on parcel post packages which came just at the peak of the Christmas mailing program. Post office officials here today said that word was received on the "lift" early this morning and that the old regulations were back in force. At midnight last Thursday file embargo was put into effect, restricting all Iirst and fourth class mail to five pounds. The embargo placed on mail ing of packages east of the Mis-. eisslppi has been lined, accord ing to Railway Express com pany and today parcels for des tinations beyond that point were being accepted as usual. Transport Plane Crashes In Osaka TOKYO, Dec. 10 (P) An army C-46 transport plane crashed two minutes after tak ing off from Itami airfield, Osaka, today and all aboard ex cept one person were killed, fifth airforce headquarters said. T'.ie number of passengers and crew members was not reported. Headquarters said the cause of the crash was not known. An army board is investigating. Barnum advised the supervisors that in the past written recommendations by former grand Juries concerning slot machines had not been car ried out by law enforcement officers. He stated that the grand Jury specifically wanted incor porated in the ordinance the stipulation that slot machines are subject to confiscation when found by a law enforcement of ficer in anyone's possession. Dis trict Attorney Charles E. John son said that in the past the machines had to be found In actual operation before they could be taken over by officers. When the supervisors pointed out to the jury that an ordi nance passed by the supervisors would affect only unincorporat ed areas of the county, the grand Jurors replied that they were confident that if the coun ty took the lead, all incorpor ated towns would pass similar ordinances. Fighting raged in four prov inces Honan. Shansi. Shantung and Hopeh and the communists made test thrusts in northern Manchuria, where government officials say the communists are prepared to throw 100,000 to 153,000 men into a new cam paign. At Nanking, authoritative sources said today Chiang Kai shek has chosen two negotiators for a peace mission to Chinese communist headquarters at Ye- 'Amber1 Authoress Gets Divorce LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 P) Robert John Herwig, marine corps veteran of the Pacific war, obtained divorce Monday from Kathleen Winsor Herwig, who became Band Leader Artie Shaw's fifth wife in Juarez, Mex., last October. She obtain ed a Mexican divorce shortly before her marriage to Shaw. Herwig, 31, testified Miss Win sor, 28-year-old author of "For ever Amber," best-selling novel currently being made into a movie, told him before he went overseas early in the war that she was in love with another man.
