Land Laws Review Urged By Western Congressmen WASHINGTON, AuR. 5 (IP) Many western congressmen ex preu ready agreement with the recommendation made last week by Senator McCarran (D.-Nev.), for a review of the federal land lawi. "Stock taking" is badly need ed, aid Rep. Peterson (D.-Fla.l, chairman or the house public ldnds committee. His committee, in attempting to work out a plan by which the federal government should make payment to states and their sub divisions in lieu of tasjes on these lands has found tile rec ords in "utter confusion," he said in an interview. "We found that the public land represents 24 per cent of the total area of the United States," Peterson said. "That was the first time its total area 455.000,000 acres was known. "Title to much of it is con fused by incomplete sales under various grants, scrip disposals and other sales schemes. Mil lions of acres are restricted by withdrawals, the reasons for some of which has long passed." More than 90 per cent of the remaining public land lies in the 11 western states and Mc Carran and Senator Murdock (D.-Utah), have been studying means for clarifying its status. They introduced a bill early in the 79th congress designed to "recapture" from the executive department the power over the public lands. ''It should be done. The McCarran-Murdock bill would subject all withdrawals, except those for parks and for ests and other reservations al ready authorized by congress to congressional review. Tempo rary withdrawals would termin ate after two years unless speci fically approved. "Many of the most valuable and most highly mineralized areas in the nationa are tightlv locked up indefinitely from all productive improvement," Mc Ctrran declared. "For years, thee withdrawals have vir tually ended all homesteading. To a very serious extent they hamper or prevent the future ex ploration and development of those mineral resources upon which much of the continued progress of the western states depends."
