Truman Vetoes Bill For Silver Creek WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 tPt A bll which would have let the government consolidate land holdings in Oregon's Silver creek recreation project was ve toed yesterday by President Truman. The President said a provision which would have allowed the secretary of the interior to judge land titles would conflict with established practice of having the attorney general examine such titles. Under the bill, the secretary of the interior could trade lands in the project in order to obtain adjacent terrain. Aug. 3 (.VI Brit ish Indian troops were moving by sen today to Unsra, Iraq port on the Persian K'df "car the Iranian frontier, and the British foreign office, the Indian office in London and the Indian gov ernment expressed varying views tot wiiat the movement Ineant. An Indian government com munique released in New Delhi last night said the soldiers were being sent to Basra "In order that they may be on hand for protection, should circumstances demand it, of Indian, British and Arab lives and In order to safeguard Indian and British In terests in South Persia (Iran)." The communique was expand ed today with the additional statement: "There is no ques tion of the troops going into Persia except In the case of a grave emergency, which it Is hoped will not occur." A British foreign office spokesman In London, however, said the men were being sent to Basra merely to relieve troops on duty there and "we will withdraw troops equivalent In number to those being brought in from India." Neither he nor the Indian government specified the number of troops, who left Bombay yesterday for the five-day voyage. I The Perscids, traveling in the orbit of Tuttlc's comet and ap pearing in practically equal numbers from year to year, form the best known swarm. Counts between August 10-13 are made by members of the American Meteor society and many other interested persons. On clear, moonless nights from 60 to 100 per hour of these fleeting lights may be seen dashing across the skies during the pre-dnwn hours; about halt as many in the late evening. This year the full moon will block out the fainter me teors. Anyone willing to count for an hour or more is asked to send his report to the writer at Eugene, Oregon.
