Tough Test For Snapp Youthful Spencer Holds Good Tocoma Ring Record Promofr Mack Lillard. who has seen Kayo Mel Spencer in action, thinks the colored Ta coma lightheavy will prove a real acid test for the local ring champ in their main event bout tomorrow night at the armory. Spencer is just 20 years old. is six feet tall and weighs 175. He has a long reach and has won five of six recent bouts by knockouts. The statistics put him just about of equal size with his opponent. Ursal Snapp, who also is a six-footer and rangy. Snapp has fought two bouts since he came out of the arrpy. outpointing Billy Sunday and knocking out Johnny Peters, and will be the intense favorite of the crowd to do likewise with Spencer. Snapp is not only a very popular Klamath county boy, he is an excellent boxer with a good punch, so the favor itism the crowd will show him when he coroes into the ring to morrow night will not be purely sentimental. Another Fiver The bout will be five rounds. Tn the other fiver, Johnnv Jones of the Southern Pacific will meet PFC Len Allen of the Ma rine Barracks in a middleweight scrap. Jones, well-built, stocky left hander, has shown three times here and Improved with each fight . His first fight went to a ; three-heat technical for Billy Sunday, principally because Jones failed to guard his chin, but he has made no such mis take in later bouts. Very little Is known about the marine who will fieht Jones ex cept that he is said to be one of the most promising leather neck leatherpushers who have beer, working out In the big bar racks gymnasium, a gym that turned out some very good fighters while the militarv in Ftailation was running full blast. Quartet of Prelims In addition to the Snapp-Spen-cer headliner and the Jones Allen tiff, four prelims of four rounds each are on the card for tomorrow. Reserve seat tickets for the matches are on sale at Matt Fin nigan's store, and at last report pasteboards were going the way of all precious commodities. General admission copies will be placed on sale at the armorv box office at 7 o'clock fight night. Portland Teams Still In Race PORTLAND. July 29 .P) The undefeated class in the an nual state semi-pro baseball tourney was narrowed down to two Portland teams today: Gil bert Furniture and Rialto Bil liards. In daylight games, Forest Grove and Reliable Shoe eased out of the tournament with their second defeats. McElroy's Ball room shut out Reliable, 5-0, and Byorly's put through a walk, double and single in the extra eighth inning to eliminate Forest Grove, 8-7. Not since 1912 when the im mortal Walter Johnson and Smoky Joe Wood reached the 30-victory mark did two great pitchers come along with such peerless parallel performances. Following on the heels of Newhouser, who became the ma jors' first pitcher to win 20 fames Saturday, Feller racked up his 19th triumph yesterday I by shutting out the Washington Senators 2-0 in the opener of a doubleheader. The Indians also won the nightcap 7-4 to advance Wl Baseball Scores High By The Associated Press Western International league baseball scores reached almost basketball proportions over the weekend with a total of 254 hits and 189 runs in 11 contests. Scores ranged from Bremer ton's 3-0 win over Tacoma in yesterday s first game to the 28 15 track meet which Vancouver won from Yakima Saturday night. The latter game bettered by one run the 42 run total racked up in Wenatchee's 24-18 victory over Salem earlier in the week. Through the maze of base hits, Wenatchee moved back in to a virtual tie with Salem for the league lead while Bremer ton moved ahead of Tacoma in their nip-and-tuck race for third place. Wenatchee took a 1 1 three ' weekend contests from Victoria with a 16-3 Saturday triumph followed by 12-11 and 16-2 twin win Sunday. Sox Keep Lead The pace-setting Boston Red Sox maintained their 11-game lead over the New York Yan kees by gaining an even split with the St. Louis Browns. After Denny Galehouse has stopped them 3-2 in the first game, the gox stripped six St. Louis chuck- ers for 13 hits and an 11-4 tn- umoh in the afterpiece The Yankees also had to come from behind to break even with Chicago. Held to six hits in the opener by Johnny Rigney who blanked them 2-0, the New Yorkers hopped on Ralph Ham tier and two successors for 11 hits and an easy 7-1 win. The second-place St. Louis Cardinals narrowed Brooklyn's National league leading margin to a game and a-half by blank ing the Boston Braves 2-0 while the Dodgers were being humbled by Pittsburgh's Pirates 7-3. Cubs Adrance The third place Chicago Cubs advanced to within six and a half games of first place by sweeping both ends of a twin bill from the Philadelphia Phil lies 11-3 and 3-1. A seven-run first frame helped Hank Borowy. returning to the mound after being knocked off the hill Sat urday, to his fifth success. Despite a pair of home runs by the Giants' Johnny Mize, which raised his league leading total to 22, the Cincinnati Reds downed the New Yorkers twice, 8-3 and 5-4. Soft Loop In Muddle Outsido Boll Circuit Ends Ploy This Week Going into the final week of scheduled play ,lhc Moose soft ball team is too fur out in front for anyone to catch now and conversely the Merchants have the cellar slot in undisputed con trol, but positions in the stand ings in between the Moose and Merchants are still not settled. This week bottles up the month of July and also packages the Softball schedule for the season s second half play, but a playoff for the league title is in the making. Softball Standings Team W L Moose 4 0 VFW 2 1 Palmerton 3 2 KC 3 3 Elks 2 2 Ashley 1 3 Merchants 0 4 The first half finished with Moose and Elks tied on top of the standings, thereby earning for both a berth in the playoff. The second half, so far as the Moose team is concerned, has gone the same way as the first, but the Vets at present have re placed the Elks in the runner-up spot. By agreement when the schedule started, if cither of the winners of the first half dupli cates in the second, the next team in line takes a playoff spot. The two remaining positions in the title series will be decided this week. Two Garnet Tonight Tonight the Elks take on Palmerton at Recreation field In what will be the last game of the schedule for both outfits, and over on Applegate field the Mer chants have a game with Ashley Chevrolet. No matter how those tilts go, they will serve only to further muddle the middle of the standings. men Wednesday night sched uled play Is supposed to official ly end with a single game be tween the Vets and Moose on Recreation diamond. But since j there was a 6-6 tie last Monday between the Vets and Ashley that has to be replayed, and . since the Vets can't play two ' games at once in Wednesday's twilight, that deadlock will probably be played Friday. Only after that game will the picture of the second, third and ! fourth places in the standings be I clear, and maybe not then Packers Fall Before Ashland Lowell's Packers ran into some tough going over Ashland yesterday afternoon, going down to a 15-5 defeat at the hands of the Ashland Elks. Byron Cody relieved in the sixth and was 100 per cent ef fective the rest of the way through. Tex Harris, hurling for Ash land, gave up only seven hits.
