Redbirds Take National Lead By Th. Associated Pr.ss Brooklvn'i fond dtoam of 1046 pennant has exploded into t grisly nightmare today with the Cardinals back in first place and the Dodgers on a six-game losing bingle. Seven games ahead on the July 4 dividing line, the Dodgers have crashed toward their doom on a fatal western jaunt while St. Louis, safe al home, has eaten up the entire lead and forged ahead by a half game. , ,, All is not lost lor the gowanus faithful if the Brooks can pull out of the tailspin before it becomes a habit, for the Red Birds still have two long eastern tours before the curtain drops. The discouraging factor to the Brooks is the certain fact that St. Louis appears to be leveling p otf lor anoincr 01 us lainuua stretch drives. The Phillies, who kept St. Louis out of first place Wcdnes day, fought hard to bar the door last night but finally succumbed B-4. It was the first time the Cards had undisputed posses sion of the lead since they bowed to the Phils May 21 and dropped down into a tie with Brooklyn. Kirby Higbc was charged with his third setback when the Reds broke out with three runs in the third. The Brooks now have won only one game in nine western starts. The result left ,vi . ---- the Bruins four games off the Pittsburgh broke Dave Kos los' jinx, downing New York, 7-3 after the rookie southpaw had beaten them four straight times. Preacher Roe. who took over when Starter Ed Bahr had to bow out due to a pain in his side, was the victor with relief help from Johnny Lanning. The Boston Red Sox main tained their 11-game lead over New York by nosing out Chi cago. 3-2 on Tom McBride's third hit and second double. Joe Gordon's two-run homer in the fourth inning was enough help for Mel Queen in record ing his first triumph since his discharge from the army. Queen, a loose-jointed right hander with a blazing fast ball, scattered eight St. Louis hits in his 3-1 success. Other encouraging news to VanitM fnn wns the word that Shortstop Phil Rizzuto probably will rejoin nis maies lomorruw. Gil Coan's speed enabled Washington to trim Detroit, 1-0, in a night game as the rookie outfielder flashed around the bases for an inside-the-park home run in the eighth inning off Dizzy Trout. HIBMD By HALE SCARBROUGH Zale-Groxiano Fight Tony Zale. long one of my favorite fighters, looks very much due to get his block knocked off next Thursday night when he goes into the ring against Rockaby Rocky Gradano, a lad who can really hit. .Zale cur rently is the cham pion and likes to compare himself to Joe Louis they're both 32 years old and both were in the service about the same time. 1 suppose, to further the c o m p a rison. you can add that neither Louis nor Zale is going by his true last name. Louis' legal moniker is Bar row, as everyone knows, and Zale's is Zaleski. But there the comparison about ends, because even Tony's grandmother does n't think Zale can hit like Louis. He weighs at or around 160 pounds, is 5 foot 8, and has scored 50 knockouts in 93 bouts. His face is beginning to look like he makes a living in the ring. Zale was in the navy as a chief specialist something or other in Gene Tunncy's physi cal training outfit, which does n't rate him very many points in this corner. Before he went into the navy, he fought out of a crouch, bob bing and weaving, and fought for points though getting his share of knockouts. Since com ing out of the service Zale has had a half-dozen fights, stood straight up and won them all by knockouts. So much for Tony. He goes in against Rocky Graziano, a terrific . puncher who has mowed his way through the welterweight division and is now taking on someone his own size. The fight, in Madison Square Garden is expected to draw a half-million berries at the gate, and it looks as though. uraziano is going to take Tony right on into" camp. ... We're beginning to wonder if Klamath isn't slightly jinxed in competing against Medford in sports. Football, basketball and now baseball. Is it ever going to end? Clyde Carlstrom is a good friend of mine, but I'm still try ing to figure out why Mel Car penter didn't pull Clyde out of the game when he got the tying run against him on base in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game. He had Frannie Miller and Jimmie West 'both in the game. . . Also not in the sports line, Gabriel Heatter on the radio last night remarked to the ef fect that the "man with the red galoshes" was headed back to the governor's mansion of Georgia. Gabe might not know it, but it's red galluses, not ga loshes, that Gene Talmadge wears. Galoshes you wear to paddle around in the mud and snow; galluses, ye durn fool Gabe, are for to hold yer pants up. mi DANCE Saturday Night K.C. HALL Sponsored by Townitnd Club . The meeting, considered one of the most important develop ments in administration of post war intercollegiate sports, was called by K. L. Wilson, commis sioner of the western conference and secretary of the National Collegiate Athletic association. The NCAA will hold a sepa rate meeting after the assembly of the 16 conferences. Wilson said he hoped the con ference representatives would reach an agreement on "uni form practices that are in ac cord with the fundamental prin ciples we share." He added: "There has become evident an alarming trend which could well wreck our whole purpose of amateurism if it is not check ed. That is the picture of col leee athletics seeking out the iboy instead of the boy seeking out college atniciics. "The result leads to a stale of semi - professionalism which distorts the whole conception of athletics as a part of education. Therefore the paramount issue before the meeting is the future of the spirit of amateurism in intercollegiate athletics." Veterans Meet Palmerton Nine SOFTBALL STANDINGS Team . W. L.
