TI'MIIAT, J.lf n, ma, r.te T Berserk Vet Slain After Gun Battle WEST LOS ANGELES, Calif., July 16 VP) A war veteran was killed by a fusillade ol police bullets at the veterans facility administration grounds yester day shortly after an army doc tor had been seriously wound ad. The war veteran was identi fied as Hansel E. Thomas, 25, of WhiUicr, Calif. The wounded physician. Col. Irving H. Willett, 54, of Los Angeles, told officers how he was shot three times before Thomas was cornered by police and slain near a nurses' home: "I had. a flat tire about a block from the hospital and was out of my car looking at it when this fellow meandered up. 'Oh, so you have a ilat tire?' he said. I told him 'yes,' and then he whipped out his gun and started shooting. I'd never seen him before." Fired At Police Four policemen who were summoned, said they yelled at Thomas to give up as he was walking across a lawn. They said that Thomas began firing. The officers said they then fired, riddling Thomas with eight bullets. He died 15 min utes later. The condition of Col. Willett, a practicing physician in Ft Wayne, Ind., before he Joined the army medical corps five years ago, was reported as "very satisfactory" last night. Col. Willett was wounded in the neck, abdomen and shoul der. Officials at the hospital said Thomas had been treated at the institution's mental hygiene clinic but had not been a pa tient at the hospital. Thomas' father, E. E. Thomas of Whit tier, said his son had been treat ed for "extreme nervousness" at an army hospital in Topeka, Kas., in 1945, just prior to his discharge. He said his son went to the hospital yesterday to ob tain some medicine.
