I l- - -- ' es We have eectn'c N The cilv ol Bend takes oartlcular pride In lawns, whether a modest residence or palatial home, of which Bend has a surprising number. The park area which borders Mirror pond presents fine view for the folks In the ueoer picture who hare neatly kept homes in that section of the cltv. Below, kids and dogs plar alona the parkway and despite the chill of the water, find swimming Invigorating on a warm day. Almost every home, which has a frontage on the pond, boasts a rowboat for the young fry. . Bend Is Shining Example Of Well-Planned Proect (Continued From Page One) up on claims, the big lumber op erators nf the Minnesota and Wisconsin areas came In and stored up the timber against the time when their own would bn gone. Planned by Drake Willi the coming of timber operations, Bend began to tnkn on the aspects of a town. Tim layout of lli'nd gors to the cred it of A. M. Drake who came from St. Paul, Minn., in the first decade of the century, lie built a log house on the Deschutes river, the house still standing and now the home of the Bend Masonic lodge. Drake put In n small sawmill and a power plant and platted tho nearby aren giv ing it wide streets. The park ad dition he left unplatted for fu ture development. Drake sold out In 10UII or 1010. The power plant and dam put In by Drako below where Pilot Butte Inn now stands, caused tho water to back up anil form a beautiful, natural look ing pond which has long been known as Mirrnr pond. Wldn lawns, home sites, a playground established through the W. E. Harmon foundation, walks and flower bordered path, mnkci vMlrror pond desirable from every point. To tho north, of the town is Pioneer park where smooth green lawns sweep down to the water's edgo and whern picnic tables tempt tho towns folk. George Palmer Putnam, for mer publisher of the Bend Bul letin, platted seven acres on tint west side of the town which ho sold as home sites. This also borders on tho water. Now Bend, despite her acren of park and lawn area, has mi specific park levy but included in the annual city budget is an item for pork purposes. Thd budget for the current year Is 73.'I0 and includes parks and recreation. The budget figure for last year was $542.1. There Is no charge for park facilities i This Week at i Hafter's Lawn Chairs Folding type. Bend has a commission manager form of government and the man ager Is responsible for park op eration. Swans Multiply Some 13 years ago, the city bought a pair of swans. Now thu swan families have grown. There are many wild ducks on Mirror pond and they stay and their fumilles stay and the wild life is a delight to old a no' young. Mora could he said of Bend, Its Interesting history of rail de velopment which is quite like our own, but there is another comparison to be made. It's our own town. Klnmuth Falls started its Top sy growth on the banks of Llni; river. Hence, Llnkvlllc. Later, the part of the town which stretched east became known as Strlngtown. Then Klamath Falls. Too many people came to our town to "make money and leave as fast as they could buy n ticket." But much to the sur prise of their families, a lot of men liked the place. Liked the atmosphere. But thoir wivcn didn't. As little as 20 years ago, the women folk wept because "they couldn't grow anything." But then they discovered the secret of water and the gardens and lawns did grow for their that wanted to put them In. Let's start with the proposed Veterans' Memorial park. This Is the outgrowth of planning commission discussions. On November 7, 1944, voters gave the city the right to start pur chase of property and the ex change of property along the river. It was termed a "blight ed area" in commission discus siuns and folks coming into town were gelling a preuy bad impression. The wheels started moving and soon all property was acquired wan tne exception ol one small piece which is as surred as soon as it is free of legal entanglements. Possibilities There The property lies bclwcen Link river and Lake Ewauna, some six acres described as from Center street to the Luik river bridge and Muin street to Lake Ewauna. It is wedge shaped and the surprisingly lovely old trees give a promhie of something that can really be accomplished in an ambitious face lifting job. Sheldon Brumbaugh, Klam ath rails architect, has prepared a model of Veterans' Memorial pnrk which will be a reul en trance to tills city in the near future. ' The moment all the property is acquired, titles cleared and the green light on, the property will be turned over to the park board which will be the adminis trative body for execution ol plans and development. This should be within a six months' period. Along Link river and Lake Ewauna, grass can grow, native shrubs and trees planted, old trees cast their shade on expan sive lawns, and Klamath Falls will begin to put on her long neglected party dress. The Deschutes, whose waters are tho life blood of the region to the north, has made Bend beautiful. Little Link river can be expected to do Just as much, but it's up to the citizenry to help and not by talk alone. It t pick and shovel, trowel and spade, concentrated effort and the will of the town to help the little lady out of her gangly adolescence. Classified Ads Bring Results.
