Quotations
NEW YORK. July iAP Assorted
stocks did fairly well In today's market
but many leaders suffered from ncgll-
fience. The list was moderately active
n the first hour although dealings
dwindled fivm then on and, while the
total of around loo .000 share was well
above Friday s low mark of 490 000, the
session still was on of the slowest of
the past year. Trend variations, for the
most part, were fractional and Irregu

Public Opinion
By EARL WHITLOCK
In that Declaration of Inde
pendence whose signing we
celebrated on the recent Fourth,
there appears
this phrase
"A decent re
spect for the
opinions of
mankind." So
the signers of
the document
not only de
clared the Inde
pendence of the
colonies, but
they gave mankind their rea
sons.
Consideration for public opin
ion for what "people will say"
can be carried to absurd and
stultifying lengths. But a "de
cent respect for public opinion
is one of the prime factors in
keeping civilized society half
way civilized.
I imagine there are times
when most husbands want
mightily to beat their wives,
and wives to sneak up behind
their husbands and administer
a message with a club. But the
decent respect forbids. There
are times when we weary of
the daily grind all of us and
want to quit. But the decent
respect forbids. We don t want
to be called "yellow" and "quit
ter." It is that decent respect
for the opinion of others for
public opinion, that resulted in
the United Nations and that
eventually will rule that coun
cil.
"Rest In Memory Garden."
Next Monday, Mr. Whitlock
of the Earl Whitlock Funeral
Home will comment on "Un
sung War Heroes."
