Newspaper Page Text"Alfrua Members Work On Project Altrua clan of the First Methodist church has been busy on projects for the Isolation hospital for its last three meetings. The ' -first of the scries was held in April at the home of Mrs. J. R. Mo . Lcllan. 719 Alameda, and at this meeting the name was changed h from Junior Matrons to Altrua, a name suggested by Mrs. Paul Dcller, meaning "unselfish and thoughtful of others." Following the business meeting the evening was spent in making cartoon . and Joke books for older children. The meeting of May 7 was at the home of Mrs. Carol Poole . of 5459 Walton drive and there was a large attendance, domes , were made for dolls, and later ,', (n the evening Mrs. Poole served decorated birthday cake in honor of those members whose . .birthdays fall during May. They were Norma Uerlings, Marian ' Parker, Mae Herndon, Esther "iDeller and the hostess, Margaret Poole. The guest of honor was Mrs. J. E. Bartruss of Salem, the ' ' mother of Mrs. Poole. ; The third meeting was held In . ,'iune at the home of Mrs. Eldred , Putnam, 2555 Wantland. Stuffed dolls were made for the enjoy i, jnent of tiny patients and the .."rest of the evening was spent in playing games, with awards go ing to Mrs. Wendall Smith, Mrs. '"M. H. Melchert, Mrs. P. Rozen- dal, Mrs. Victor Phillips, Mrs. M. Barker, Mrs. W. Herndon, ..,',Mrs. B. Patterson and Maude .Witherspoon. ' It was planned to hold a pot .,',)uck dinner at the church July 1 and after that the group will not meet again until September. ' Women's Club r,V, LANGELL VALLEY The "Langcll Valley Women's club met with Violet Harris and Mae JTlale on Saturday, June 27. The meeting was conducted by the president, Nettie Davis. J Members voted to have the In- terior of the community hall painted, as well as the exterior. J A dance is planned for July 13. , Election of officers made Miriam Potucek president. Cther officers are Joan Mar J chant, vice president; Charlotte I Fitzhugh, secretary; and Mar- garet Burnett, treasurer. Pictures of Crater lake will be , given to Mrs. Rebecca House and Mrs. Tillie Smith who are mov- ing away. A gift will also be given to Mrs. Nettie Davis for , making the past year a success- Xul one for the club. Cory, enter tained the Friendly Circle at her home on Shasta way Wednes day, June 26. This was the meet ing postponed from the previous week. Luncheon was served at 1 p. m., followed by a business meet ing. It was decided that the meeting day would be changed from Thursday to Wednesday, lor a time at least. Prop, Mid-Week SOCIETY Society A general meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the First Methodist church, held in the church par lors on Thursday, June 27, opened with the study class at 11 a. m. It was conducted by Miriam Smyth, and she complet ed the course of study on Im mortality. A sack lunch was enjoyed at noon and at 1 p. m. the presi dent, Mrs. Earl Redman, called to order a meeting of the execu tive board. Mrs. John Yadon was in charge of the prayer cir cle at 1:40 and it was well at tended. This was followed by the general meeting at 2 p. m. with Mrs. Redman presiding. A letter was read from Mrs. W. L. Lewis urging a good at tendance at the summer school to be held in Forest Grove Au gust 18 to 23 and Mrs. Calvin Hunt, corresponding secretary, read a letter from Georgia Rich ardson, district president, per taining to the district meeting at Bend September 11 and 12. Guests of the day were Mrs. Harry Peltz, for many years a member, and Mrs. LaDage. Mrs. Yadon emphasized the fact that the clothing drive for overseas relief is still on, and that articles may be left at the First Christian church. Erma McBride sang "Whis pering Hope" and Mrs. Lee Mc Bride conducted the devotions, with the theme "Evangelism, i Mrs. Walter Herndon, program chairman, called upon Mrs. Red man and Mrs. Yadon to give re ports of the Oregon conference at Seaside, which Mrs. Yadon at tended as spiritual life secretary. Tea was served by Esther circle, the committee consisting of Mrs. O. R. Holloway, Mrs. John Riach and Mrs. Elmer Balsiger. White syringa and red roses centered the tea table over which Mrs. Holloway pre sided. There will be no general meeting until the fourth Thurs day in September, but all circles are to unite for a potluck meet ing the second Thursday in Au gust. Further details will be an nounced later. Banquet Members from the Bend, Med ford and Grants Pass Degree of Honor were entertained by the local Degree of Honor Monday evening, June 24, at a banquet served at the Klamath Lutheran church, and later were honor guests at the meeting in the KC hall. Three attended from Bend, five from Grants Pass and twenty-two from Medford. Minnie Davis Card, state or ganizer and national committee woman was present at the meet ing, and three were initiated at this time, Maida Arthurs, Marie Anderson and Jerry . Pearson. The Medford drill team put on some drills, and there were two duets by Genevieve and Bill Hanson in honor of Mrs. Han son's birthday. Refreshments were served at the close of the evening. LANGELL VALLEY The guild of St. Barnabas church was entertained by Mrs. Bessie Frazier at her home on Thurs day afternoon, June 29, when the ladies sewed for the mission ary box. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Frazier later in the after noon. Jones of this city exchanged vows. The rites were read by the Rev. Cecil C. Brown in the First Baptist church. Following a wedding trip to San Francisco, Mr. and Mrs. Jones are at home at 122 Hillside. Gudcrian Olene Mr. and Mrs. Bob Lewis are now living temporarily on the Grigsby ranch but are expecting to build soon on a ten-acre traci they recently purchased from Mrs. Henry Grimes. The Lewises were former residents of Olene, and Mr. Lewis had a blacksmith shop here at one time. Mrs. Mary Gebhart has ac cepted a position at the Henley store. This store is owned by the Boyd Bruners, who formerly operated a store at Olene. Mrs. Gebhart also worked for them at that time. The George Stevenson family, Mrs. Nona Corpening and Mrs. Duke Booker attended the Noel Hamilton nuptials at the Meth odist church in. Klamath Falls on Thursday evening, June 27. The bridegroom is a nephew of Mrs. Stevenson and the grand son of Mrs. Hattie Calkins. Dinner guests at the Marion Barnes home on Sunday, June 23, were Christina and Clara Mc Intyre of Klamath Falls. The for mer has been visiting here as the guest of her sister for 10 days. She is an employe of Swift and company at ban rrancisco. Mrs. Berkely DeVaul of Sa lem, Ore., was the house guest of Mrs. Nona Corpening recent ly. Mrs. DeVaul and Mrs. Booker, who is also a 'guest at the Corpening home for the sum mer, are old friends. Mrs. De Vaul visited with Mrs. Booker several years ago at the latter's home in Kentucky. The Ray Lanes are visiting with Mr. Lane's sister and fam ily at Mosier, Ore. Members Make Merrill Visit Twenty-one members of Pros perity Rebekah lodge 104 paid an official visit to Merrill lodge 151 Monday evening. Following the regular lodge meeting, re freshments were served to mem bers and guests. Cousin Visits Edward Mc Cracken Jr. had as guest last week his cousin, George Mast Jr. of Ellensburg, Wash. Jane Gordon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gordon, has re turned from San Jose State Teachers' college. Mrs. Fred I Gordon is at Ashland attending the first session of summer school at the Southern Oregon College of Education. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Schrel ner are spending the summer traveling extensively through the eastern states. Ted A. DeMerritt underwent major surgery last week and is a patient at Hillside hospital. His condition is reported to be satis factory. Mrs. Teresa McComb left this week for Medford where she will visit at the home of her son, David McComb and family. Mrs. Harold Freeman is a pa tient at Hillside hospital in Klamath Falls. Clayton Reber returned last week from Bakersfield, Calif., where he was employed by Cal Ore. Packing company. Here for Summer Mrs. Frank Snyder of St. Helens, Ore., will spend the summer here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Miller of 2145 Wantland, while her husband, Frank S. Snyder formerly of Klamath Falls, is in Shanghai, China, in engineering work. If he finds living condi tions in China fairly good, Mrs. Snyder hopes to join him there by Christmas.
