Soroptimists Hold
Final Meeting
Soroptimists at their last program meeting of the year, lis
tened to a talk on suburban planning by Frank Howard, county
wiirtrouii. nnrt nndinnnr T I hi. ii rH i a nnn nt tho ctr.tr pftmmtllM on.
,,oint0d Dy the governor to make
lem nnd work out some way to remedy It.
Howard said that with the coming of the automobile era
many people have migrated from cities to suburban areas and
mndc their homes, so that they could have more freedom in the
mutter of playgrounds for chil- :
drcn and gardens and could
cut down the expense of living.
The advent of light, low-priced
curs made it possible for them
to go to and from their work
in a minimum of time, and a
great many city workers have
joined the throng of suburban
ites. This has raised a serious
problem, particularly in our
own suburban areas,, that of
drainage, sewage disposal.
roads, fire protection, and our
present laws are inadequate to
control these matters.
Howard said that Wisconsin
und Michigan have very satis-
fnctory legislation to govern
these matters and California
has some laws affecting subur
ban planting that arc very good.
In this stale the county com
missioners arc hampered in
these things because they can
not do anything about it until
ordered by the state legislature.
Mrs. W. E. Lamm was wel
comed back to the club after an
absence of several weeks.' She
gave a brief talk about her
visits with New York Sorop
timist clubs and said she had
been most cordially received.
Gusts for the day were Mrs.

dent. Kathleen Thompson, vice

the fact that this was a most
important project, to which all
service clubs could lend their
support.
