Washington In Row Over Gila Project WASHINTON. June 84 (JFt The interior and agriculture de partment are feuding about the farmers on reclamation projects. The fight is in the house irri gation reclamation committee, which is considering legislation to make changes in the Gila (Ariz.), reclamation project , The bill authorizes the recla-1 nMtion bureau to select the set tiers, to prepare the land for its i first crop and to do some other ; tilings which the agriculture de-! partmcnt has been doing for non-reclamation farmers for, many years. Clashes between the two de partments are not new. Rep. Kockwcll (R-Colo.), says he sees a similarity between this argu ment and one that developed on the bill which created the graz lug service, now an interior bu reau. There also was some earlier controversy as to which department should supervise the iorest service, now an agency of agriculture. - The current dispute is actual ly the agriculture department's second attempt this session to confine the reclamation bu reau's activity to construction activities. It will be spearhead ed by Assistant Agriculture Secretary Charles A. Brannin, who is to testify this week or next. His statement already is in the record. Referring to proposed author ity for the reclamation bureau to acquire lands, prepare, farm and supervise the settlement of these lands, the statement said: "The activities contemplated under those authorities are agri cultural, and not engineering lobs." Soviet Consul Attends Trial SEATTLE, June 24 (JPh Michael S. Vavilov, Russian consul-general, was here today from San Francisco to report to the Russian government on the espionage trial of Russian Navy Lt. Nicolai G. Redin, 38, for whom a jury panel was to be drawn in federal district court today. Vavilov conferred with Redin and Defense Attorneys Tracy E. Griffin, Seattle, and Irvin Good man, Portland. The Soviet pur chasing commission posted the lieutenant's bail and is continu ing his pay and footing trial costs. The consul said the Rus sian navy loaned Redin to the purchasing commission. The U. S. government charges that Redin, while on duty here, enticed and attempted to induce Herbert Kennedy, a shipyard worker, named as principal gov ernment witness in Redin's in- . dictment, to obtain for Redin the plans for the destroyer ; tender, the USS Yellowstone.
