River Guides To Try Snake EUGENE, June 20 UP) Three mcmben of the McKenzie River Guides' aatociation, considered the bent white-water boatmen in the writ, left here today for Eagle Bar, near Homestead and east of Baker, to navigate a party of U. S. coast and geodetic survey men through the tur buiant waters ol the Snake river. Leading the party is Ed Thurs ton, veteran of many river runs, including the Snake, Salmon, Middle Fork of the Salmon, Deschutes. Crooked river, the Rogue and his own famed Mc Kenzie. Other boatmen who will handle the lightweight ply wood crafts on the 125-mile jaunt through the deep Snake canyon will be Carroll Adams and Everett Spsulding. The toughest part of the trip is expected to be Hell s canyon, believed to be deeper than Grand Canyon, and sprinkled with ad venturouF waters. Thurston last navigated the Snake four years ago with a party that included Ken Taylor and Fred Mountain of Eugene, he said he had lost a boat on that trip, but only be cause the empty craft broke f loose. UNDERGROUND CITY The Witwatersrsnd geld mine. . V South Africa, is the inrld'i ' largest underground city.
