tons of salt.

From Klamath Falls
Four more Klamath Falls
servicemen havo been released
from service at the personnel
separation center, United States
naval base, Bremerton, Wash.,
navy bulletins said today. Also,
one Kcno serviceman, .Richard
K. Rowland, MM 2c, has been
discharged.
The Klamath men who have
received discharges are Pren

Prehistoric Bone
Found In Oregon
LA GANDE, June 17 (P)
An ancient bone, apparently
the tibia of an elephant which
roamed over Union county In
the Pleistocene ge 100,000 years
ago, has been added to Eastern
Oregon College of Education's
tonsil collection.
Dr. Charles Qualntance of
tho geology department said the
bone, found by Lester Van
Blokland while digging post
holes on his ranch near Moss
chapel, was the first definite
evidence that the earlv-dny cle
phants were in Union county,
although remains havo been
found in Baker and Umatilla
counties.

nature lore, handcrafts, swim

telling and rending.

General Killed
In Plane Crash
FOHT KNOX, Ky., June 17
fP,Ma). Gen. Hugh J. Gnffey
and two other army officers
were killed and four servicemen
were injured last night when
their plnnc crashed as it came
in for a landing at Godman field
here.
General Gaffey, 51-year-old
commander of the second and
fourth armored divisions in Eu
rope during World War II, has
been commanding officer of the
armored school at Fort Knox
alnce the war's end. He was j
named post commander at Fort j
Knox only last Tuesday.
The plane was returning to
Fort Knox from Ft. Benning,
Ga., where General Gaffey had
attended an infantry conference.
The plane landed at Bowling
Green, Ky., to check its position
since its radio had failed. Then
it took off again but developed
engine trouble as it came in
here for a landing.
General Gaffey commanded
the "hell on wheels" second ar
mored division in Sicily and
Italy and the fourth armored di
vision under General George S.
Patton in France and Germany.
He served Patton as chief of
staff on two occasions. He won
several military decorations.
He is survived by his widow
and one daughter, a student at
lexas university.

Hughes' Big Plane

Howard Hughes' mammoth air
plane, the 1IK-1. rests safely in
a graving dock on Terminal is
land toduy after a hazardous,
spectacular 24 -miles journey
from the Hughes factory in Cul
ver City.
More than 100,000 persons
watched the world's largest
plane being moved In three sec
tions while power company em
ployes clipped wirea and moved
poles to provide clearance.
Hughes said the S20.000.000
plane, built almost entirely of
wood, "cost less per pound than
any other large experimental
plane ever built In thi coun
try."
It will be about two months
before the giant ship makes its
first test flight.

After threatening for several
days, Klamath skies droppad a
little real rain on the area over
the weekend.
A total of .44 of an Inch of
moisture was recorded on the
official rain gauge, with most
of the rainfall occurring Satur
day night.
