Burness Urges Care Of Tires ' "It probably will bo quite a few yeart before there Is any such thing as a 100,000-mlle tire for autot" Jumrs Durness, man ager of Burness Motors, 316 South Sixth street, said tixtay. "but In Die meantime Intelli gent car owners can add many thousands of miles to the life ex pectancy of today's tires by fol lowing a faithful pattern of tire maintenance, and carrying on the practices they learned dur ing the war." American motorists, Mr. Bru ness said, made great progress these last five years in learning the Importance of proper tire Inflation and the "cross switch ing" of tires every 5000 miles to equalize wear. "One thing that a lot of drlv ers still need to get straight," Mr. llurncxs emphasized, "is the fuct that it's Just as injurious to over-inflate a tiro as to under inflale it. This habit Is definitely noticeable as a holdover from Die war days." June 8 IIP Pennsylvania's 75,000 hard coal miners will return to work in the anthracite pita Monday un der a new contract providing for an 18a cents an hour wage increase and a $2,700,000 health and welfare fund. Their week-old strike ended late yesterday when leaders of the anthracite operators and John L. Lewis' AFL United Mine Workers agreed on a new pact after nearly five weeki of negotiations. The welfare fund whose cost Is based on last year's produc tion of anthracite will be fi nanced by a five cents a ton royalty on all hard coal mined. It Is estimated that all the concessions closely paralleling those gained by tne son coal miners in their contract with the government would cost the operators a total of $50,000,000 to $00,000,000 a year. Retail Price Affected A spokesman for the opera tors estimated the increased overhead from the new contract would add to the retail price of anthracite used chiefly in home heating. Regarding the welfare fund the hard coal mines won an even greater concession than the bi tuminous workers Under the agreement the fund will be ad ministered by three trustee two of whom will be named by Lewis and a third by the oper ators. The soft coal agreement pro vided for one tustee selected by the UMW, one by the govern ment and a third by the mine operators. Lewis decared the anthracite contract already had been ap proved unanimously by his 34 man scale committee making it official. "I think the agreement is wholesome and constructive and I will warmly recommend its approval to the mine workers," Lewis said, explaining that the contract would have to be sub mitted to the membership for a referendum vote. But since the pact gives the miners virtually all of their de mands overwhelming approval was predicted. msAi.D mews. Kiiai r'i. ota. , lATuanAT.
