Basin Potato Shipments Soar To Startling Total Rolling beyond all estimates, Klamath basin'i potato ship nont for the 1945-46 season lave reached the startling to al of 12,002 carloads, while val es have risen to $10,250,000 tar the year's crop. State-Federal Inspector Ross Aubrey reported today that May ihipmcnts hit an aggregate of 182 carloads, moving the season total over the 12,000 mark. Previous estimates had been for ibout 11,800 carloads for the leason, and the previous value istimate had been $9,929, 672. County Agent C. A. Hender lon said that the unexpectedly State Grange Cnooses Bend BAKER, June 6 iP) The State Grange convention resumed meetings today after sotting Bend as the 1947 convention site nd reelecting Morton Tompkins of Dayton to another two-year term as master. The convention yesterday voted to support the proposed congressional act forming a Co lumbia River valley authority after scattered opposition to the resolution. The organization refused, lowever, to pass a resolution pro posing more federal aid to vet erans seeking farms or to enter business, explaining the revised GI bill of rights had accom plished the purpose sought by the resolution. Other officers elected yester day were: Elmer McClure, Mil waukee, overseer; Ray Gill, Port land, and Peter Zimmerman, Yamhill, executive committeemen. high shipments, plus a late seas on price boost, put the value up to ten and a quarter millions. New Dairy Charges Not Effective Yet PORTLAND, June 6 (. Dairy producers and retailers were warned today new dairy products prices have not yet be come effective and it is unlaw ful to charge the higher prices approved by the office of eco nomic stabilization. Andrew Trice, Oregon OPA price executive, said the OPA has only received the announce ment but not the directive neces sary to put the price orders in effect. j Classified Ads Bring Results. j Government Makes Governors Unhappy SALEM, June 6 Wl Gover nor Earl Snell returned to his office today after attending the national conference of state governors in Oklahoma City, as serting the governors are un happy over federal handling of reconversion ana veterans housing. He said the governors favor ed more uniform highway laws as a means of reducing acci dents, and endorsed a military training program that calls for national guard training, college military training, reserve offi cers training, or a year in the regular army. Park May Get New Flowers The planting of flowers to brighten the summer landscape of Moore park was discussed at the regular meeting of the city park board Tuesday. The plan was referred to Mrs. G. A. Krause for investigation. Also discussed and turned over to a committee for investi gation was a suggestion for cleaning out rubbish around the edge of Klamath lake in front of the park. The water would be cleared of sticks, logs and other debris, according to the proposal. Bills for the care and feeding of park animals and other inci dental business terminated the meeting. The park board meets the first Tuesday of each month. Tulelake Men Plant Celery TULELAKE, June 6 A new. venture in the commercial rais ing of celery has born launched by three local men and a resi dent of the San Francisco area. Interested in the crop are Wil liam Kandra on whose ranch it is being grown. Earl Agor, own er of Earl's market, and Bernard C. Schultz, owner of the Tule luke Boat club and Ed Roeller of the Arden Farms of San Francisco and Oakland. Half a million plants, three inches high, will go into the 12 aere plot. Friday and Saturday 60 persons were employed plac ing the plants in the deop black loam. The variety is Utah green which needs no bleaching and which is largely used by markets of the west coast. Several in quiries have already been re ceived from eastern points. Nor mal yield of the field should be 20 freightcar loads. Four acres wore planted Fri day in 54 hours. Soil of this area was analyzed after Earl Ager became interest ed several months ago in the cul ture of celery and the analysis determined that the ground was a "natural combination" for suc cessful growing of the crop. The plants will be irrigated and cultivated in the same way that a potato crop is grown, irri gators using plastic tubes from the ditch to the rows. Four per sons can handle the work until weeding and the expense of growing will equal that of a crop of onions.
