John A. Lambert, 36-year-old
employe of the Pacific Tele
phone and Telegraph company
here, wus miming an Injured
nose und multiple bruises in Sa
lem today lifter he and his sis
ter plummeted into the Willam
ette river Thursday In a rented
Piper Cub plune.
Lambert, who lives at 303 S.
Hill, had gone north to spend
Memoriul Day weekend with his
mother, Mrs. Marie Lumbert.
While there he rented the plane
and he nnd his sister, Mrs. An
toinette Uose of Salem, took off
from the Salem airport. Lam
bert, in a conversation with his
wife here today, said he was fly
lug near the river when his
plane suddenly struck a 66.000
volt power line, crashed into a
pole nnd then dropped into the
wuler. Neither was bndly hurt
and following their rescue by
a tug, were treated at a Salem
hospital and dismissed. Electric
service In Snlem wns hnltcd sev
cral minutes following the crash.
The flyer took lessons at both
the Salem and Klamath Falls
airports. He is employed as
transmission man with the tele
phone company.

The nation's known death toll
of Memorial Day traffic and
other accidents mounted to 03
today (Friday). 19 more than for
the aame holiday last year.
Traffic mishaps claimed the
lives of SO, compared with 20
last year. The total was only
seven less than the national saf
ety council's prc-holiday esti
mate of 57 fatalities on the high
ways. Twenty-five persons
drowned and IB died ot mifcel

ceived as to the fate of the sub
marine or crew and in a letter
to the family signed by James
Forrestal, secretary of the navy,
Harold was officially declared
dead as of April 1, 1946.

Fifty-three surplus diesel engine
units, built to power General
Sherman tanks, have been sold
by the Portland war assets ad
ministration, it reported today.
One sale, it said, was to Hugh
Sherwood Jr., Toledo, who is
starting a sawmill and another
to C. W. Priest, Vancouver,
Wash., to power a fishing boat.
