Olene There were 13 memberi of Last River grange in attendance at Pomona May 11 at Fort Klam ath. There was really a very good turnout throughout tha county, considering that this is a very busy time for farmers. A number of Olene residents attended the funeral of Jake Hickman which was held in Klamath Falls on Friday, May 17. Mr. Hickman was a true Klamath county pioneer and had just passed his 81st birthday. He was a brother-in-law to Mrs. Nona Corpcning. Word was received on Tues day morning from the Klamath Valley hospital of the passing of Mrs. Herman Tipton, a long-time resident of this community, Mrs. Tipton had been seriously 111 for the last four months. Mrs. Tipton Is survived by her husband and five children. Sympathy of all friends and neighbors Is ex tended to the bereaved family. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Marshall were called to Condon on Tues day by the passing of an aunt of Mrs. Marshall. They will return the last of the week. There was a good election turnout on Friday from Pine Cirove, Olene precincts. Voting was at tho community hall in Olene. Mrs. Basil Drown left for Port land Saturday, May 18, to ba with her mother, Mrs. Paul Set ter for a short time. Mrs. Set ter will submit to major surgery 'some time this week. The grange and Suburban league are cooperating in this project, and a meeting of a Joint committee of the two organiza tions was recently held with tho county court to study fire pro tection needs of the suburbs It Is understood the two organiza tions will soon sturt the circula tion of petitions for the organiza tion of the district. A part of the fire protection resolution the grange also went on record a proposing a study In cooperation with other sub urban orgunlatlnns, looking Into the feasibility of Incorporating the suburban area Into a munic ipality." Roper, 23, of Castle Rock, Wash., narrowly escaped Injury at 3:30 this morning when the car he was driving hit a soft shoulder and over turned about 25 miles north of Chemult. Boper's car, a 1940 Chevrolet coupe, went off the embank ment, rolled over once and came to rest upside down against two trees. Roper climb ed out and caught a ride to Klamuth Kalis. He reported that he was driv ing alone, making about 10 miles an hour because of dense fog. The car hit the soft shoul der and he was unable to get it back on the road before it rolled over. Peterson, were turned down by agriculture department official. Peterson proposed to Secretary of Agriculture Anderson that (1) Oregon be allowed to take grain from government stocks In the i state, replacing It after tne har vest, or (2) Oregon borrow tne wheat "on paper" from Texas, using stocks available, and pay it back at harvest time. "Secretary Anderson told us that this la a national problem, and that there Is not enough wheat to go around," Peterson reported.
