Bend Grabs 46 School Track Title i Aihland Noted Out By ',' Half-Point; Klamath I.' County Boyi Place ' CORVALLIS. Ore., May 20 P) Bend ranked as the 1946 itate tracn and field champion today after a classic Saturday meet which shattered the pole vault and the 34-ycar-old mile record. : Bend, whose soaring George Rasmussen set a new vault rec ord, edged out, 22 i to 22, the Ashland squad paced by the new champion miler, George Fuller Jon. Hillsboro was third with JS. Lanky Fullerton, hitting the tape an easy 40 yards ahead of his nearest competitor, ran an amazing 4:24 mile to outclass the 4:29 state record set in 1912 by Paul Wilson of Portland's IWashington high, i Rasmussen broke last year's 12 foot 3-inch pole vault record With a 12 foot 9 Jump but it wasn't as high as onlookers had expected. In local meets, Ras mussen had several times topped jthe 13-foot mark. ; Jack Doyle, Hillsboro. tied Jhe 1938 high hurdle mark with (14.9 and won the low hurdles in :23.1 only .3 of a second river that record. Georges Dusette will match muscles with Al Szasz and Gust Johnson will tangle with Mad Mike Nazarian. As another sidelight. Angelo and Dusette, who were in a ter rific pet with each other a few weeks back because of the dumpy Italian's refusal to stake his coast junior heavy crown in a bout with the French Cana dian, have patched up their beef and the title match will be held here May 30. Midget Racer Cops All-Time High Purse PORTLAND, May 20 mAn all-time high northwest purse of $3000 for midget racing was won yesterday at the midget auto track here by Jud Fuller, Port land, in the 10-lap feature. In the same race. Claude Wal ling, veteran Seattle auto race driver, was injured when his tiny speedster crashed into one driven by "Zeke" Siegler, Oakland, Calif. The latter was not injured. Ferriss boasts five wins without a setback this season follow ing his 4-0 shutout victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday. The 24-year-old sophomore's fine performance gave the American league leaders an even break in the twin bill, for Detroit's Hal Newhouser beat the Sox 3-1 on four hits in the nightcap. The second place New York Yankees moved within four and I a half games of the Red Sox by sweeping their doubleheader with the Indians, 2-0 and 7-1, before 53,310, Cleveland's larg est crowd of the season, Ruffing't 267th Win In the opening game Spud Chandler outpitched AUie Rey nolds in a brilliant duel to gain his sixth triumph against one de feat. Red Ruffing, aided by Joe DiMaggio's two-run homer, had an easy time in the nightcap as he chalked up his 267th big league triumph. St. Louis Cards' Manager Eddie Dyer led with his southpaw aces. Max Lanier and Harry Brecheen, and they rewarded him with 9-5 and 4-0 wins before a Philadel phia record crowd of 35,049. The Brooklyn Dodgers dropped a full game behind the Cards when they succumbed to the righthanded wizardry of veteran Ed Heusser, who permitted seven hits in pitching the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 victory. Sox Bow Twice The up-and-coming Washington Senators licked the Chicago White Sox twice, 4-3 and 7-1, coming from behind to win the opener from 45-year-old Ted Lyons with two runs in the ninth. After blowing a 6-0 lead and losing 8-6 to Chicago's Cubs in the opener, the Boston Braves came back to win the afterpiece 5-3 on a three-run seventh inning rally. In a parade of lefthanders. Pittsburgh and the New York Giants divided a doubleheader, the Pirates winning the opener, 3-1, and the Giants the second half, 5-1.
