Fire Sweeps Peyton Co; At Dorris DOURIS, May 20 A huge lumber ramo and about 100 cords of wood, located In Dorris and owned by Peyton and com pany of Klamath Falli, has been burning since about 6 o'clock Sunday night but li under con trol now and being allowed to burn out. A stiff wind is blowing in Dor ris today and a fire guard has been thrown around the ramp to keep the flames from spread ing. The fire Is about SO yards away from stacked lumber be longing to the Dorris Lumber and Moulding company but the stacked lumber is not in danger, watchers believe. Origin of the fire was unde termined, it Drone oui laie yes terday afternoon and the cord wood stacked at the ramp is burning on the Inside. Fire- fighting apparatus was brought to the scene last night and wet the cord wood down without putting out the fire, and the ground around the ramp was soaked to prevent spreading The ramp, about 18 feet high and 120 feet long, was built by Peyton and company two years ago. Lumber Men Go To Bend Oregon pine industry leaders will gather at Pilot Butte inn. Bend, May 24, for a conference of the state forest practice com mittee of the Western Pine asso ciation, and for a forestry field trip. J. F. Daggett, Prineville, formerly of Klamath Falls, is committee chairman. Stuart Moir, Portland, chief forester for the association, will attend. Following the morning com mittee session there will be a joint afternoon meeting with rep resentatives of state and federal forest land management agencies for a- discussion of problems of mutual interest. On Saturday, May 25, the southern Oregon sec tion of the Society of American Foresters will conduct a field trip to the Pringle Falls region, where demonstration areas in virgin Ponderosa pine have been established to show different methods of timber selection, forest operation and manage ment. In announcing the meeting. In dustry leaders stressed that in striving to meet the challenge of the vast housing program with its demand for lumber, Oregon's pine mills are not neglecting the forest future but are keeping in force essential good forest prac tices to assure continuous timber growth to meet future needs. S. forest service will open nearly 500,000.000 board feet of timber annually to production, the regional forester said here. H. J.
