Big League Bats Rap Against Horsehide By JACK HAND NEW YOKK, April 16 (JT) Banc-ball goes big league again today as the 1948 season opens in eight cities before an esti mated 223,000 fans, eager to sec the real stuff instead of the syn thetic wartime brand of play. Although the weatherman forecasts cool, cloudy weather in most of the parks, the turn stiles arc duo to click their mer riest tune since the all-time high of 249.010 in 1931. Detroit will top the list with a turnout of 50,000 plus at Briggs stadium to watch the de fending world champion Tigers wrestle with the St. Louis Browns. Braves Purchase Ray Sanders BOSTON, April 16 (4s) First division stock of the Braves soared today with the news that the club had purchased grace ful Ray Sanders, St Louis Card inal regular first baseman for the past four seasons, and Mat thew (Max) Surkont, a rugged, right handed pitcher from the same club. The up and coming Braves gave as their part of the deal, first of many likely in this first postwar season, a "substantial amount of cash" and Infielder Tommy Nelson. Nelson, who only appeared in 40 of the Graves' games last sea son, now is at his west coast home with his sick young son. He will be assigned to Columbus, the Redbird's farm in the Amer ican association. Characterized by his new, and also old manager, Billy South worth, as "one of the best clutch hitters in the business," Sanders may give the Braves the needed fillip to gain them a first divis ion berth in the scramble with Pittsburgh and New York. Yanks Send Hurler Ardizoia To Oaks NEW YORK, April 16 (AP) The New York Yankees cut two more players off their roster today, sending Pitcher Rinaldo (Rugger) Ardizoia to Oakland of the Pacific Coast league and In fielder Joe Buzas to Newark of the International league. Ardizoia, a 26-year-old right hander from San Francisco, played with Kansas City in 1942 before he entered the armed service. Buzas opened the sea son as the Yankee shortstop in 1945 but was shipped to New ark in midseason. He hit .225 in 61 games with the Bears. Fred Robinson, member of the recreation committee, was also given the green light on starting work on the field, following the plan for moving the diamond to the southwest corner of the enclosed field. Rowland Raps Solon Protest LOS ANGELES, April 16 (P) "I want Coast league games won on the field, not by technicali ties." With that statement, Pacific Coast League President Clarence Rowland yesterday disallowed a protest by Sacramento on a Hol lywood victory in the first game of a doubleheader April 7. The Sacs complained that only eight names were on the Hollywood lineup as presented to the um pire. Rowland, however, fined Um pire Bill Doran and Hollywood Manager Buck Fausett S25 each for negligence.
