33 Members Reelected Br RUSSELL BRINES TOKYO, April 12 (P) Thirty, three members of the 1942 "Tojo Diet" definitely were reelected and 40 other former members were returned to the house of representatives on the basis of final returns tonight from all but six districts in the nation wide election. Conservatives apparently had clinched a total majority, al though the leading liberal party which is conservative despite Its name was nowhere near control. With 394 of the house of repre eentativos' 468 seats decided, women had won 32. All of the 1942 representa tives re-elected had passed an Death Can Be Asked For Redin SEATTLE, April 12 () United States Attorney J. Charles Dennis said last night the U. S. government can, if it desires, ask that the death pen alty by hanging or the firing squad, be imposed on Soviet Lt. Nicolai G. Redin, if he is con victed of conspiracy to spy against the United States gov ernment. , Lt. Redin was indicted by a Seattle federal grand jury Tues day on five counts of espionage with intent to injure the United Dennis' statement amended one he made Wednesday, in which he said the maximum penalty would be 10 years and $10,000 fine on each count of the indictment. 70 Years He also said Redin, Seattle representative of the Soviet pur chasing commission, if found guilty, could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years on the count of conspiring to obtain and transmit to a foreign government plans dealing with national de fense, and a maximum of 10 years each on the other four counts. This would make a total of 70 years. The information and plans which Redin is accused of ob taining, lelated to the U.S.S. Yellowstone, a new type of de stroyer tender. Redin. at liberty" under $10,- 000 bond, returned to Seattle Wednesday night from Portland, where he was arrested March 26 by federal bureau of investi gation agents. Dennis' assistant, Allan Pome- rov. announced that Russian of ficials had reauested that the scheduled Monday arraignment : of Redin be delayed a few days. Pomeroy said he probably would seek court approval of the delay. Swine Owners Warned Against Hog Cholera ' SALEM, April 12 (JP) The state department of agriculture today warned swine owners to guard against hog cholera, a few cases of which have been report ed in the state. i The swine owners were ; warned to dispose properly of all , hog carcasses, to control stray dogs, and to destroy carrion-eating birds. The department said one rea son for the increase in the di sease is in the number of vehi cles carrying hogs, Truman Signs Bill For Vets' Housing ' WASHINGTON, April 12 (AP) President Truman signed into ' law today a bill providing $253, 727,000 for veterans' housing. The funds will be used to provide approximately 100,000 temporary dwellings for war veterans. Most of the homes will be converted service bar racks. A similar number of tempo rary homes was authorized b previous legislation. Cargo Motorship Will Be Launched PORTLAND, April 12 (IP) Albina Engine & Machine Works was to complete its war-born shipbuilding program today with launching o. the Tahoelan dang, cargo motorship built for the Netherlands government. : The tiny ship, the last of 20 such vessels, is hull 238 at the yard. Thirteen of its sister ships have left for service in the West Indies. Several of the other 40 formerly legislators had been disqualified by former Premier Hideki Tojo's regime and only now are returning to politics. Parly- Lineup By tonight the party lineup of definitely won seals was liberals 116, progressives 86, social demo crats 78, communists three, with three others apparently certain of victory; minor parties 39 and independents 72. The liberals and progressives are rated as conservative, with the social democrats, minor par ties, and communists represent ing various views farther left. This lineup means an enforced coalition in the house, which doubtless will be dominated by a conservative viewpoint. Many social democrats and probably most of the independents tail in to this category under modern Japanese political conditions. The socialists, however, showed surprising strength. The communists tnree as sured and probable six seats were fewer than the 12 conceded them in pre-election prognosti cations. Home Minister Cluizo Mitsu- ghi reported to the cabinet that the nationwide average vote was 72.3 per cent "generally better than expected." Leading Vote Getter The nation's leading vote get ter appeared to be a relatively unknown school principal, Atsuo Kiyakawa of Hiroshima, who polled more than 200,000. He campaigned as an independent. Eight women were leading all candidates in their respective districts. Mrs. Michiko Yama saki, who divorced her husband and was elected on the same day. was among the nation's six high est vote getters with 176,000. Mrs. Yamasaki, 46, who cam paigned for "the' emancipation of womenhood," felt it necessary to divorce Kenji Yamasaki when he returned from a four-year civilian administration post in Borneo with a Borneo native for wife and two children. Nor mally, a Japanese woman pledges to stick by her husband, come what may. Japanese men still shook their heads at the surprising turnout and solidarity of the women's vote. Some privately opined that "novelty attracted them this time. There probably won't be so much interest or so many suc cessful Women candidates, at the next election." Governor Snell Returns To Oregon SALEM, April 12 (JP) Gov ernor Earl Snell returned to Oregon today after spending a week in California. He crossed the state line by automobile this morning, thus relieving President of the Senate Howard C. Belton, who acted as governor during Snell's absence. Snell is expected to be in his office tomorrow. Governor and Mrs. Snell went to San Diego to visit their son, William Earl Snell. Anrll 12 (AP) The Soviet Union will have re ceived $27,000,000 worth of mpriirnl suuulies and hospital equipment in contributions from the American Red Cross by the end of 1946 according to El liot W. Shirk, director of Rod Cross activities in the U. S. S. R Approximately 50 per cent o( the donations consists of clothes. bedding and household supplies for orphanages, invalid homes and destitute individuals in war- ravaged areas, sain Shirk. The over all relief project also calls for the contribution of 10. 000.000.000 Oxford units of peni cillin, the equipping of two 300 bed sanitoriums in Minsk and Smolensk, and six 2 SO-bod clin ics. Orphans in White Russia will benefit under a $240,000 project which will include sub stantial clothing donntions.
