Checkers Yill
Resume Work
PORTLAND, April 6 (P)
Union and employer spokesmen
mnounced today CIO checkers
ind supercargoes will resume
work Monday at Beaver, Ore.,
ammunition docks after a week s
itrike
The walkout idled 225 CIO
afflllated longshoremen, who
also will return to the job. ,
The back-to-work agreement
hinges on renewed negotiations,
which will start Monday morn
ing, said R. E. Ferguson, man
ager of the Waterfront Employ
ers association. ' He said several
weeks' deadlock resulted because
"both sides tied so many reserva
tions to their proposals ... but
we'll make another start toward
reaching an agreement."
R. J. Wolf, president of the
CIO local, said he thought the
dispute based on a checkers'
request for more pay for . hand
ling ammunition was "just
about settled."
Roseburg Claimed
Lumber Capital
ROSEBURG, Ore., April B'ffl
Portland lost its status as Ore
gon's lumber center because of
overcutting, and Eugene its suc
cessor now is "completely shot"
for the same reason, an Oregon
and California administration of
ficial asserted here.
Harry I. Nettleton, O. & C.
forester in charge of research,
said Roseburg now is the state's
lumber capital. He urged that
new sawmill developments be
squelched, to discourage over
cutting. Recommending sustained-yield,
operations, he said this area's
mills now produce about 400,
000,000 board feet a year.

Flashes Of
Life
PHILADELPHIA, April 6 (fP)
For six straight evenings, Dom
inick Guerra's automobile dis
appeared from in front of his
barber shop. He always found
it later, abandoned a few blocks
away.
Tired of keening track of the
car, Guerra sold it. Two days
later he got a package in the
mail. It contained five dupli
cate ignition keys and an un
signed note reading:
"Now you've sold your car,
we'll have no further use for
these."
WELL IN HAND
KANSAS CITY, April 6 W)
Assistance , was needed by a
tipsy sailor at a downtown
street intersection and he got
it in very short order.
The police dispatcher sent a
patrol car.
Someone on the scene pulled
a fire alarm and six trucks
and two district chiefs sirened
to the spot.
In the confusion, a fireman
called an ambulance.
Then the shore patrol arrived
and whisked him off leaving
the other services empty-handed.

Silky 'Cindy'
ANNAPOLIS, Wash., April 6
(,ip)Mrs. E. Hiller. R.F.D. 5. said
todav she had telegraphed the
T.ns Anodes sheriff that she had
recognized in an Associated Press
picture her silky haired little
dog "Cindy," missing here six
months. The Los Angeles photo
graph, published in the jjremer
inn Sim Inst Tuesdav. showed
the little dog being separated
from her "boy friena, a oig,
black-eared dog named Mike
which had brought the little
stray home with him three weeks
ago.
"The caption called her
'Frisky,' but it was 'Cindy,' all
right," Mrs. Hiller said. "Any
dog owner will tell you they can
recognize their own dog in a
photograph."
Mrs.. Hiller said she asked the
sheriff to see that the little dog
was saved until Mrs. Hiller could
claim her.

GILCHRIST, April 6 The
comedy "Good Night Ladies,

in though all seats were filled
long before opening time. The
