League Takes Stand On Problem Dissatisfaction with present Oregon facilities for handling questions involving children has brought demands for state-wide study in this field by the League of Women Voters and other organizations. The survey being made by the local child welfare committee of the Klamath County league' was described by Mrs. M. P. Leonard, chairman of the committee, at the meeting held on Wednesday. The object of the survey is to study existing facilities, the basic laws, and the most advanced methods in order that league members and others may be pre- pared to support sound, correc tive legislation whenever it is presented, and make recommen dations when called upon. The local juvenile court was visited by the child welfare com mittee and Mrs. Leonard said Judge David R. Vandenberg had asked the committee to assist in the establishment of a juvenile court or probation committee whose duties would be: 1. To assist court in enlarging probation facilities. 2. To assist in the integration of all child welfare programs, 3. To help interpret the juve nile program to the community. As salaries at present are not adequate to hold or attract quali fied welfare workers, the wel fare committee recommended that a request be sent to Oregon league board to appoint a sub committee to advise the merit council that the present salary standard of welfare workers be improved. The league has been requested to aid in the city ten-year recrea tional plan. One out of every five families is looking for a home and two out of every five houses are sub standard, was pointed out by Mrs. George Stevenson, who dis- cussed the emergency housing program. There Is sucn a Hous ing shortage that it will require the building or reconverting of one million, live Hundred tnou sand residents a year to catch up, Mrs. Stevenson outlined the plan recommended by Wilson W, Wyatt, new administrator of the national Housing agency, some of its features include premium payments where necessary for increased production, guaranteed markets for material manufac turers, priorities and allocations, wage-price adjustments, recruit ment and training of additional workers and postponement of all non-essential construction. She also discussed in detail the Wager - Ellender - Taft bill. This bill would establish a per manent unified national housing agency, make federal funds available to help communities in slum clearance, encourage pri vate enterprise to meet the tre mendous housing shortage, en able direct private investments to serve lower income groups, provide aid for rural housing and establish methods for dis posing of war housing. The active list to be considered by the National League of Women Voters at their conven tion in Kansas City this year is a short one, containing only three items, strengthening of the United Nations organization, strengthening the organization and procedures of congress and strengthening the economic poli cies which promote maximum ) Wedding Date Of interest to their many friends is the forthcoming mar riage of Blanche Ottoman and John Carson. The bride-elect is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Ottoman. She was graduated from Malin high school and attended Oregon State college. She is employed by the county AAA office where she has worked for the past three years, and is a member of the Catholic Daughters, Venture club .and the BPW. She met her future husband while he was sta tioned at the Klamath naval base. The groom-to-be is the son of Mrs. Josephine Carson of Los Angeles. He has been in the service for three years, one year of which was spent overseas, He recently received .his dis charge and is now employed by Lockheed as an expediter. Mr. Carson attended schools in New York and Illinois and prior to his coming to the west coast lived in Jamiaca, Long Island, N. Y. He is a member of the Holy Name society. , The nuptial mass will take p'.ace at the Sacred Heart church Easter Monday, April 22, at 10 o'clock in the morning. The young couple plan to make their home in Los Angeles. Appointed MERRILL Mrs. J. H. Dee- nan was appointed to fill the first vice presidency vacated bv Mrs. M. A. Bowman for the Lost River Garden club. Mrs. Bowman, who moves into the nresident's chair left vacant by Mrs. J. R. Blatch, made the appointment. The club met Thursday at the home of Mrs Scott McKendree. Mrs. Blatch has resigned to move to Madras. The members voted to .meet sometime this spring with Mrs. E. D. Lamb, Portland, for les sons on flower arrangement and complete details will be an nounced later- Mrs. Hugh O'Connor demon strated a flowex arrangement following lines used by Ruth Allen, flower arrangement artist of Los Angeles.
