Early this morning on high
way 07, about 15 miles north of

driving his 1940 Studebakcr
coupe south on the highway
when a Plymouth coupo driven
by Mrs. E. V. Stumps of San
Gabriel, Calif., rounded a curve
and crushed into his car.
The impact knocked Pitts' ve-
nicie on the road and Inflicted
dumugo estimated at $300. An.
proximately $50 damage resulted

Burningham
Will Head
USBR Survey
C. W. Burningham of Red
ding will head the survey staff
which is to conduct a complete
investigation, for the reclama
1 1 o n service of the Klamath
basin from the mountains to the
sea.
Headquarters for the survey
will be set up here in conjunc
tion with the Klamath reclama
tion project,
Burningham's work at Red
ding has included a study of a
plan to divert Trinity river to
the Sacramento basin as a pos
sible wartime power develop
ment. The Trinity is a tributary
of the Klamath, and the study
will be completed as a part of
me new mamatn survey.
Funds Provided
Regional Director Richard L.
Boko of the reclamation service
said in Sacramento today funds
for the Klamath survey had
been provided by congress.
"The Klamath basin report
will be comprehensive in na
ture, covering an inventory of
all land and water resources
and including recommendations
for an overall plan by which it
will be possible to 'achieve the I
maximum beneficial uses of
these resources for agricultural,
industrial and recreational de
velopment," Boke '. said. "The
need for the development of
more irrigated land in tnc basin
is indicated by tho heavy de
mand of war veterans for farm
homesteads . in the forthcoming
opening of 7500 acres for settle
ment in the Tulelake division
of the Klamath project later
this year. The study also is lm
porta nt in view of the gradual
decline in timber resources of
the area."
The first field work will in.
elude land classification studies
in the UDDer basin, geologic ex
ploration of i various damsites,
topographic mapping of reser
voir s it e s, and hydrologlc
studies of basin stream flows.
The bureau's investigation
will lead to the preparation of
a department of the interior re
port on the Kiamatn pasin
which will include also the rec
ommendations of the fish and
wildlife service, the Indian serv
ice, the national park service,
the geological survey, the graz
ing service, the bureau of mines
and other agencies of tne de
partment with respect to the
proposed river development
program. Tne report uuimaieiy
will be submitted to tne gover
nors of Oregon and California,
and the corps of engineers of
the U. S. army for their com-.
menls before it is submitted to
the president for transmittal to
the congress.
