People who desire to visit the barracks are welcome, according to Capt. Short, but the former policy of calling tho barracks first to make arrangements for the visit still applies. S. geological survey has found no evidence to support re ports of renewed volcanic activ ity at ancient Crater Lake Na tional park in Oregon. The Interior deportment sent experts to make studies follow ing reports last fall that a strange cloud of smoke or gas was seen on several occasions Just above tho lake. A parly headed by Geologist Fred W. Cater set up recording equipment and then mule a hazardous 1000-foot descent down the snow-covered wall of the crater In order to place a hydrophone in the lake. The equipment operated for a week before a snow slide snapped tho cable. South Santiam Road Surface Said Breaking SALEM, March 12 (P) Heavy snow fell last night In the moun tain passes, with the state high way commission announcing the South Santiam highway is al most impassable. The commission said lt Is dif ficult to get traffic through on tho South Santiam west of Santiam junction because of heavy snow and rain, road crews being unable to keep the holes, where the road surface Is break ing, filled with gravel. The road report: Government Camp Snowing, 7 Inches new snow, total 93 Inches. 30 degrees. Packed snow on road between miloposts 52 on Mt. Hood highway and 19 on Waplnltla. Santiam Junction Snowing hard, 34 degrees, 9 inches new snow. Packed snow and slush on road throughout district. Tolul snow at summit 133 inches, at junction 72 Inches. Astoria Lower Columbia highway still closed at east city limits of Astoria, detour avail able. Still one-way traffic around slide on Mist-Clatskanie highway. Meacham Rain and snow last night, some slush on pavement. The rain was general over the state except for the snow in the mountains. in which It operated, however, the device recorded no evidence of volcanic activity. Groups Meet To Discuss State Building Program SALEM, March 12 (P) The stale emergency board met here today with the state board of control to decide whether to go ahead with the $10,000,000 building program for stulo Institutions. The boords spent all morn ing inspecting the sites for the projects, and planned to meet late today to decide what to do. First project on the list, and the only one for which bids have been received, is the 300-bed custodial building at the cottage farm of the state hospital. Oregon Woolen Store 800 Main Delegation Asks Street Repair Job A delegation from the Doty street area appeared before the city council last night and asked for information concerning tho paving of that section of town. Jack Murphy of 722 Doty, ad vised the council that mud con ditions were so bad that the post office authorities had threatened to stop mail deliv ery. A petition was also present ed to the council by property owners asking for improve ments including street paving, curbs and sidewalks on Doty street from Upham to N. 7th, N. 8th from Mt. Whitney to Upham, and N. 7th from Mt. Whitney to Doty. The council explained the procedure of paving and advised that City Engineer E. A. Thomas would give estimates. When the council was told that there were city owned lots in the area, the measure to appear on the May 17 ballot was explained, this measure' if passed to make it possible for the city to aid for the first time in this work. Asks Support W. McDaniel asked for sup port from the city in his ef forts to move houses off the state right-of-way and told the city fathers he "was just about shot at" by a woman in the El dorado and Dolores area near Portland when he wanted to cut off a limb from a tree obstruct ing his path. The city advised McDaniel that if the tree was on city owned property the mat ter could be handled satisfac torily. The council accepted a rec ommendation from the planning commission that all appeals for zoning changes be referred to tho planning commission as well as the appeal board. Mayor Ostendorf advised that G. N. Hansen of Portland, man ager of Lincoln Memorial park, would be in Klamath Falls March 21 to assist the cemetery committee in operation of the new memorial. Haad Committee Councilmen Paul O. Landry and Harvey Martin were named to head a committee to iron out spring baseball worries as per tains to the operation of the baseball park in the city limits. Landry and Martin will name their committee. Landry introduced a motion that the city attorney be in structed to institute a quiet title suit covering some city owned property and authorize reports from Wilson Abstract company on those lots he deems neces sary as a step in securing the names of parties necessary as defendants In such a suit. The motion was passed. It grew out of the fact that the city of Klam ath Falls is the owner of a num ber of lots which require a suit to quiet title and the police judge has furnished the city at torney with the description of more than 30 lots involved. Renamed "Arnold Gralapp, superintend ent of Klamath Falls schools, was renamed to that post for another three years by mem bers of the boards of education last night. Gralapp Given New Contract Arnold Gralapp, superin tendent of schools in Klamath Falls, was advised at the meet ing of both boards of education last night, that he had been re named to the post tor a period of three years beginning July 1, 1948 . . The appointment came as a surprise to Gralapp who had one and one-half years to go on his present contract with the school system. Gralapp came to the Klamath system irom L.a uranae July 1, 1941, where he. served for a number of years as school su perintendent in the eastern Ore gon city, TO ATTEND CONFAB SALEM, March 12 W Secre tary of State Robert S. OPA Seeks Answer To Milk Price PORTLAND, March 12 VP) OPA officials here are compiling data in an effort to answer Fort land milk producers' demands lor a price increase for grade A fluid milk butterfat before Fri day. District Price Administrator Andrew Trice said today region al and national offices were pre pared to intercede, if necessary, to avert the producers' move to divert milk from home consum ers to processors paying higher prices. At the same time the Oregon milk control board and several distributors' agencies have de clared dairy herds are being sold because producers cannot make a profit under existing price con ditions for feed and the sale of milk. Producers of the Wil lamette and Columbia basin area serving Portland have asked a boost from 95 cents to $1.15 a pound butterfat.
