Bill Paul Skeen Accepts Post With Board Of Education Women Mail Carriers Now Past History The familiar wartime siiiht of a woman bent under the weight of a mail pouch trudg ing up the hills in Klamath Falls is now past history. mere nave been no women employed at the local post of fice for outside work since late In 1945, Burt E. Hawkins, post master, said today. During the war about half a dozen women were used as city mall carriers for various lengths of time. The work was heavy and most ol them dldn t last more than a week or so. lour veterans have recently been added to the staff, Hawk Iiib slated, some working as clerks and some as carriers, rounding out the regular lull time stuff. Family-Style Meal Featured By USO USO activities have been some what curtailed since large num bers of the men formerly sta tioned at tho Marine Barracks have left this area, and instead of the restaurant-style service formerly offered at the club, small family-style dinners have been featured three or four times a week. Usually not more than 15 or zu men are present in an eve ning at the service club, and these, are served a special dinner at a large table. The last dinner of this kind will be Wednesday evening, the night before the USO has its last open day in Klamath Falls. All equipment will be sent to other clubs after the closing date, March 14. Paul Skeen, Klamath ' Falls businessman, was appointed a member of the board of educa tion, District No. 2, at a meeting of both boards last night In KUHS.. Skeen was present to ac cept tho appointment. He fills the vacancy left by tho resigna tion of Arthur Dickson who has moved Ills residence out of the district. Skeen has been active in va rious youth activities and is mar ried and the father of two children. Bids for the construction of an addition at Fremont school, re jected last fall on the grounds mat iney were too high, were called for again at approval of the boards last night. Bids will be published immediately, ac cording to Superintendent Ar nold uraiapp. Plans now call for a new unit to embrace dressing and shower rooms for boys and girls physical education, addition to the manual training depart ment and art and music rooms. The district authorized $26,000 ior ine new project a year ago. The boards voted to set the dato of school opening in the lan oi mat), as of September 9, a little later than the past sev eral years. This is the average opening date of all southern Oregon schools, Gralapp said.
