Political Candidates For Democratic Party Nominations Lining Up PORTLAND, Feb. ,28 () Gubernatorial and congressional candidates for the democratic party nominations were lining up today as the deadline neared ior declaration for the May primary elections. George Lavey, Multnomah county democratic committee chairman, announced last night he would seek the party's nomi nation for governor and Floyd K. Dover, Grants Pass, was listed as his running mate for secretary of state. Lavey's statement followed by five hours the announcement by Richard L. Neuberger, Ore gon writer and former state leg islator, that he. would not seek a major office. Lavey is a Portland business- Women's Clubs Slate Project s As a project for 1945-46 the Oregon Federation of Women's Clubs will honor 39 outstanding women chosen from as many communities in Oregon. Announcement of the Women of the Week from Klamath Falls will be made over station KOAC ' between 2 and 2:30 o'clock on Friday, March 1. , The choice of such Woman of Jhe Week has been made by a secret local committee consist ing of three community workers one of whom is a man. The committee has sifted the com munity for the woman most de serving th:s honor. The selection of the Woman of the Week has been made from women who rank highest in the possession of the following at tributes: 1. A woman active in com munity affairs. 2. A woman who shows qual ities of leadership. 3. A woman who possesses sincerity and understanding. ' 4. A woman who holds an in ternational viewpoint. : S. A , woman who inspires genuine cooperation on worth while projects. 6. A woman who achieves success in her homemaking. After the selection of the Woman of the Week from Klam ath Falls has been announced over KOAC on Friday, March 1, she will be presented with a bouquet through the courtesy of the Klamath Flower Shop. Navy Accepts 4 Basin Men The four young men from Klamath basin who left for Port land Sunday night have been accepted by the navy it was an nounced today. These men are, Raymond Ed ward Northcutt, Thomas Carl Gibson Jr., Maxie Elery Prentice, Klamath Falls and. Adolph Brazil of Malin. . Northcutt and Drazil signed "up as soon as they reached their 17th birthdays. A total of 18 men to date for February have been sent to the main recruiting station at Port land from the Klamath Falls sub-station, nearly doubling the quota of enlistees for the month. Not one of these men has been rejected by the main station, local recruiters stated. man and marine corps veteran of World War I. He has never held public office. "I think the present repub lican administration has done a good job of doing nothing," he declared. State Committeeman Lew Wallace listed several new can didates for party nomination for congress. He said Tony Yturri, a World War II veteran and at torney of Ontario, has filed for second congressional district. Rufus E. Wood, Clackamas coun ty assessor, also filed for first district and Lyman Ross, of Aloha, announced he would seek nomination for the same district. In Multnomah county, Ray Dooley, insurance man and World War I veteran, announced he had changed his party reg istration from republican to democrat and would file for county commissioner on that party s ticket. Lawrence, dean of the University of Oregon school of architecture and allied arts, who died late Wednesday after- Special Tax Levy To Be On Ballot PORTLAND, Feb. 28 (P) A $1,750,000 special' tax levy, much of it to be spent in repair of Portland's school buildings, will be on the city ballot in the May primary election. Lawrence, dean of the University of Oregon school of architecture and allied arts, died late yester day en route to tho hospital after he was stricken at tho Fac ulty club on the university cam pus. He had designed most of the buildings on the campus. ' A professor at the architectur al school since. 1914 and n part ner of his son, Abbott Lawrence, in the Portland architectural firm of Lawrence and Lawrence, he was active in profcssionol as sociations. He was a former vice president and director of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the Association of College Schools of Architec ture, the Pacific Coast League of Architects and the Portland Ar chitectural club. He also served on the Portland city planning commission. MIT Graduate Lawrence came to Oregon In 1914 from Boston, Mass., where he practiced his profession. Ho also had offices in Portland, Me., after graduating from the Massa chusetts Institute of Technology. Ho was born at Maiden, Mass., November 13, 1879. His widow, Alice, and three sons, Abbott, Dennison H and Amos M., sur vive.
