Carls was the son of Peter W. Carls and Jane Applegato Curls, the lulter u direct descendant of the Applegato family, sur veyors of the southern route to Oregon. Members of this pi- oncer family crossed the plains In 1843, Sorved Country With his parents, Eugene came to the Applegato country In Juckson county when he was eight years old, residing there until 1042. He served as a prl vato In the infantry, second di vision, during World War 1, having enlisted November 5, 1017.
