SSQPCDQ31TSS Salmon Runs Not Hampered By New Dams WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (P) More dams can be built on the Columbia river in Washington and Oregon without endanger ing the salmon runs in the river, Senator Magnuson (D-Wash.), said today. Around the rest of the circle, it was still a strictly musical chairs proposition, with a score of squads battling for the seats when district tournament and playoff music stops next month. Baker, Blue mountain confer ence leader, plays Pendleton this weekend, then enters the crucial Baker-La Grande games next week for the right to play off for the district 1 title. Pendleton -will take a week's rest before entering the Pendle-ton-Mac HfcHermiston playoffs beginning Feb. 18. The winner will meet The Dalles or Hood River for district 2's tourney spot. The district 3 berth will be warded at a Redmond tourna ment March 7-8. In district 4. that Medford Black Tornado is still blitzing away, but can't blow into a tourney seat until the post-season district tourna ment. Myrtle Point, barring a -complete reversal of form, ex pects to take the district S crown at the March 1-2 tour ney in Coquille. The Eugene Axemen, surging ahead on their own good play and Corvallis' bad luck, is lead ing both the district 6 contest and no-name league. The Albany Bulldogs, in the upset of the sea son, scored their first no-name victory against Corvallis and knocked the Spartans from the ' league pedestal. Corvallis came back last Tuesday, however, to kill the Salem Vikings' last hope of a no-name title. The fish passed Bonneville and Rock Island dams without difficulty but development of Grand Coulee dam made spawn ing impossible above that point The Wildlife service trapped salmon below the dam and trans planted them in other streams. The salmon spawned by the transplanted fish returned to the streams in which the transplant ing was done, the wuoaue serv ice said. "This operation" the senator said, .' changed uie namis oi we fish and it seems that the plan will be successful. The success ful operation of the fish ladders over a ten year period seems to show that additional dams on the Columbia will not endanger our salmon runs. "The Fish and Wildlife service say. and I agree, that the experi ments on transplanting salmon to new streams, even though costly, must be continued so that there will be no decrease in our salmon runs. "The service believes there still is some danger to the runs but that it will be overcome by continuing our experimental work." PGA Boss Would Rewrite Tourney Golf Regulations "" SAN ANTONIO, Tex., Feb. 7 IP) The rules of golf should be expanded and simplified, said Fred Corcoran, doss oi ine fUA tour, in commenting today on the recent blast of the United States Golf associated in the di rection of the professionals. Francis Ouimet, chairman of the championship committee of the USGA, scored laxity he said had crept into wartime golf, warning that from this point on the rules of the game must be strictly adhered to in events sponsored by his organization. "The rules as written do not cover everything that happens on a course and many of those in the book are difficult to in terpret," said Corcoran, palpab ly nettled by the criticism of the USGA. He had these observa tions as he shepherded his PGA touring golfers into warm-up play for the Texas Open. Huskies Outscore Henley 29-20 Merrill's Huskies defeated the Henley Hornets 29 to 20 in a bas ketball game played at Merrill Tuesday night. Halftime count was knotted at 10-all. Hess of Henley captured scor ing honors for the evening with 12 tallies and Fotheringham had 10 for the Huskies. In the B game Henley whipped Merrill 19-10.
