TRANSPORTATION NEWS River May Be Rerouted To Avoid Slides Considered as a possible way to avoid further landslides such as those which recently Impaired rail travel north of Dunsmuir, Southern Pacific officials are negotiating for the purchase of land near Uper Soda Springs at Dunsmuir onto which they may move tho Sucramento river as well as moving tho roadbed away from the danger urea at the base of thu hillsldu which has been sliding. Tho river has been filled In on the side adjacent to tho rail road tracks and rock has been dumped along tho bank forcing thu water to the opposite side. Tho worst slides occurred on December 28 and January 2 and resulted In a complete tie-up of rail traffic. Tho track has been moved a few feet away from the foot of the hill, but railroad officials want , more land so that there will be no future danger of slides. One tract of land under con sideration is owned by the Cali fornia Oregon Power company and another is known as the Masson meadow. T. J. Morgan Davis of Dunsmuir, who served with Southern Pa cific for 44 years, retired recent ly and ho and Mrs. Davis left to make their home In San Fran cisco. He first worked with the railroad in the Dunsmuir round house in 1902. In 1904 he was a locomotive fireman, and six years later, was promoted to an engineer.
