WATKINS WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 Ml When the steel strike threat endn, Senator Morno (R-Oro.) nald today, Industrial strife In tho country should end too. lie added he expects the steel case deadlock to bo broken shortly. "I think It Is perfectly clear that as steel goes so goes the nation, so far as settlement of the pending major labor dis putes are concerned," Morse said In an interview, "Industrial history of the na tion shows that heavy industry, particularly, as well as other large Industries follow in a gen eral way wago trends set by steel. In tho present economic strife it is obvious that many Industries are waiting to sec what happons In steel because their costs of production bear a very close relation to prices they have to pay for steel, . Confidant "I am confldunt that the dead lock in steel will be broken in the next few days If not today. I think when the steel case Is broken, existing and potential strikes will bo of short duration and with the wheels ot produc tion rolling again the hysterical demand for legislation which seeks to place a very drastic control over American labor will greatly diminish." The name Maryland was given to the eighth smallest state in the union in honor of tho wife of Charles I, Queen Hcnrlotta Maria of England, Groups Back Plan To Fix Highway 395 LAKEVIEW The Oregon Wool Growers association, Grant County Livestock ansoclation, John Day chamber of commerce and Burns Lions club arc the latest bodies to endorse the ef forts of the Luke County cham ber of commerce to secure im provement of highway 395 In northern California. Resolutions were endorsed by these groups within the pant few days, stress ing the Importance to the went coast of this highway and the need for Its reconstruction to modern standards, particularly In the area between Alturas and the Oregon state line at New Pine Creek. Harry A. Ulley, chairman of the transportation committee, and Jack Maync, manager of the Lake county booster body, se cured these resolutions on a trip last weekend to John Day and Pendleton, They report tho sup port of the Pendleton chamber of commerce also was assured, and a resolution to this effect will bo adopted at that organiza tion's next board of directors meeting. The chamber officials also are communicating with the Oregon Cattle and Horse Raisers associa tion, and it in exnected that this group will follow the California Cattlemen's association and en dorse the improvement at its meeting this spring. All of the resolutions received, which total more than 20 to date, Will be made a part of a brief which will be completed by the chamber next week and deliv ered to the commissioner of the public roads administration. A second brief urging the improve ment of highway 305 between Ravendale and Secret valley in Lansen county is also being pre pared. Resolutions received after the brief has gone to Washington will be forwarded to Congress men Englc of California and Stockman f Oregon for deliv ery to the public roads authori ties.
