2nd Lti Arthur Jackson, Holder Of Congressional Medal Of Honor, Now At Marine Barracks For Discharge ' Thundar. Jan. 10, 1848 HERALD AND NEWS FOUBTEKIf A third holder of the coveted Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest military award grant ed by the government of the United States, reported to the Marino Barracks December 26. Ho is 2nd Lt. Arthur S.' Jack, ton, 21-year-old Portland, Ore., marine, who is now at the post for aeparation, Lt. Jackson's ci tation reads: "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at tha risk of his Ufa above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the battalion of a marine division in action against Jap anese forces on the island of Peleliu, September 18. 1944. Boldly faking the initiative when his platoon's left-flank advance was held up by the fire of Japanese troops con cealed in strongly fortified po sitions, PFC Jackson unhesi tatingly proceeded forward of our lines, and courageously de fying the heavy barrages, charged a large pill-box hous ing approximately 35 enemy soldiers. Pouring his auto matic fire into the opening of the fixed installations to trap tha occupying troops, he hurled white phosphorus gren ades and explosive .charges brought up by a fellow ma rine, demolishing the pill-box and killing all of the enemy. Advancing alone under the continuous fire from other hostile emplacements, he em ployed similar means to smash two smaller positions in tha immediate vicinity. "Determined to crush tha entire pocket of resistance al though harassed on all sides by the shattering blasts of Japanese weapons and covered only by small rifle parties, he stormed one gun position after another, dealing death and de struction to the savagely fight ing enemy in his inexorable drive against the remaining defenses and succeeded in wip ing out a total of 12 pill boxes and 50 Japanese sol diers. Stout-hearted and in domitable despite the terrific .odds, PFC Jackson resolutely maintained control of the platoon's left-flank movement throughout this valiant one man assault and. by his cool decision and relentless fight ing spirit during a critical sit uation contributed essentially to the complete annihilation of the enemy in the southern sec tor of the island. His gallant initiative and heroic conduct in the face of extreme peril re flect the highest credit upon PFC Jackson and the United States naval service."' Young Jackson was commis sioned a second lieutenant on August 7, 1945, having come up from the ranks. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor On October 5, 1945. Other wearers of the medal to be stationed at the Marine Bar racks were Capt. Mitchell Paige, who reported here from the South Pacific In October, 1944, and Major Joe Foss, who ar rived in Klamath Falls in Aug ust, 1944. Jackson's home address in Portland is 4429 N. E. 80th street His wife is here with him. ' NEW BUILDINQ PORTLAND, Jan. 10 Plans to begin construction of a $135,000 physical science building at Lewis and Clark col lege were announced today.
