From the north ern to tha aouthern extremi ties of the range tha drift li over 100 miles. In the California winter 'area tha forage problem is the worst and it Is at that range the projected survey will be aimed. It's there that deer die of starvation, or at best lose , ' much of the fat they put on during the summer months in Oregon. The vegetation, pon dorosa pine, blttorbruih and tunlper, is already overtaxed iy the estimated 30.000 native ' California deer plus tha cat tle and sheep on the range, and the added Oregon migra tory hard makes feeding a serious problem for all the animals, wild and domesticat ed alike. To the cattleman lorage la. a natural resource. Just tha same as a forest is a natural resource to a lumberman, and the encroachment by tha deer herds pays unfavorable divi dends In underfed livestock. For the sportsman's angle, turn that statement around. At tha Portland meeting elements of a brewing battle ware evidenced by John Mo Keen, Oregon big gama man ager, who suggested "Take all cattle and game off tha range until the forage ia rehabili tated." A sheepman represen tative countered with the pro position that sheepmen would oppose cutting tha number of sheep on the range unless tha number of deer was cut, and a California gama man assert ed that removal of all live stock was tha most feasible plan. So tha survey la to ba made, ungarnished facts laid out and the decision of what to do lait to the Oregon and Cali fornia gama commissions.
