Plenty Of Turkeys For Christmas Feast Thero will be plenty of high quality turkey for Klamath Falls Christmas feasts this year. C. A. Henderson, county agent said, f More than enoush fine, heavy birds have been raised in the Klamath basin to supply local needs, ho said, and several Hun dred nave already been shipped to the San Francisco bay area. Henderson stated further that the birds raised this year are the best auality he has ever seen. Stengel, state chair man of the rehabilitation com mission, has announced that a special school of instruction for all fourth district American Leg ion post service officers will be conducted In Klamath Falls Thursday from l:ao to o p. m., followed by a banquet in the Willard hotel. A general meet ing Is scheduled for 7:45 in the high school auditorium. Veterans and their families and friends are invited to at tend the meeting at which rep resentatives will discuss prob lems of importance to the re turning veterans ot world wars I and II. "Giving service to veterans is the American Legion's major ob jective, stated Stengel, "and this service can only be brought to a reality and perpetuated if we all join together in a com. bined elfort to famlliarixe our selves with the various ramifi cations of the GI bill of rights." Six New 4-H Clubs Formed Interest in 4-H club work is increasing, with six new clubs organized in Shasta district last week with 54 members. Paup; cooking 1, Mrs. Harriett Cornutt; sewing 1, Mrs. Verola Thompson; sewing 3, Mrs. Bernice Thompson; homemaking 1, Mrs. W. J. Luns ford. The clubs were organized last Friday and will hold their first regular meetings this Fri day at 2:45 p. m. at Shasta school. A forestry club will be organized in the near future,. Yamashita airmailed to the supreme court requests that it grant a writ of naDeas corpus and also a writ of prohibition, prohibiting continuation, of his trial before avmuitary commis sion in Manila. They enlisted through the local navy recruiting office and were sworn in at Portland. Three 17-year-olds irom the basin have recently enlisted through the local army recruit inc office. They are. Keno. who chose the three-year enlistment in the air corps, with service in turope; Bert Puckett of Klamath Falls, 18-months enlistment; Clarence Lewis Hamilton of Klamath Falls, 18-months enlistment. Shopping Spree Expected Here Klamath merchants said to day they were anticipating the biggest holiday shopping spree in the history of the town de spite the lack of merchandise and the early start of the shop ping season. The pitch is expected this weekend, customers were wan ing over high prices and com paratively poor merchandise, ac cording to .several merchants. Several; other 'stores reported, nowever, an improvement in quality even in the past few weeks. Stores may remain open nights the inday and Saturday before Christmas but it is un likely business will continue after 6 p. m. Christmas eve. Motorists slipped and slid on city streets as they came to work this morning and a num ber of minor traffic accidents were reported. Snow depth at Santlam junction this morning was 76 Inches, with two inches of new snow last night. Odell lake on the Willam ette highway was 73 inches, in cluding three inches of new snow. A nationwide report on weather advised that tempera' tures ranging from 15 below zero to below freezing extended today from the Rocky Mountains east. It was coldest at Mlnot, N. D'., where the reading was 18 below. Other subzero weather included: Alexandria and Willmar, Minn., -14; Ashley, N. D., -12; Aber deen, S. D., -12; Mason City, la., -4; Havre, Mont., -13; Big Piney, Wyo., -13; Pueblo, Colo., -13; bidney, Neb., -z; and -i to -S in Wisconsin near the Minnesota border. Forecast for the next 24 hours in the Klamath area was warm er with light rains." Cold Epidemic Hits Schools Twenty per cent of the ele mentary and high school enroll ment in Klamath Falls was ab sent from classrooms Monday morning as influenza, severe colds and resmratorv infections reached a winter high. The percentage of absentees was highest at Fairview and Mills school. By schools it went line this: Joseph Conger, 28; Fairview, 63; Fremont, 38; Jun ior high, 67; Mills, 140; Pelican, 39; Riverside, 26; Roosevelt, 48; Klamath Union high school, 125. Superintendent Arnold L. Gralapp said today that parents should keep their children at home until all danger of Infec tion has passed. He urged that cniidren not be sent to their classes with any sign of a cold. The average winter absence is iu per cent, uralapp said, this week's report showing just dou ble that figure.
