One-Way Traffic On Main Street
Vigorously Opposed By Merchants
Vigorous opposition to the es
tablishment of one-way traffic
on Main street, as suggested In
a cross-city traffic plan offered
by StatO Highway Engineer R.
H. Baldock, was voiced at a
meeting of numerous Main street
merchants and property owners
at the chamber . of commerce
rooms last night.
The group at first considered
oPDoslllon to any one-way traf
fic in Klamath Falls. Later, It
decided to confine its opposition
to such a plan for Main street,
leaving the questions involving
Pine street or Klamath avenue
for an expression from Pine and
Klamath avenue people.
Engineer Baldock, on a re
cent visit here, outlined three
?osslbie cross-city plans, all call
ng for one-way traffic, cross
ing the city from the Link river
bridge on the south to Esplan
ade and Alameda streets on the
north. From the latter point, a
new entrance to the city will
connect with highway No. 97
north at about the point of the
overhead crossing at the north
city limns. ......
Hero ara the three plans: .
No. 1 North on Klamath,
south on Main.
'No. 2 South on Klamath
north on Walnut.
, No. 3 South on Pine, north
on Klamath.
No. 1 Best
In making his report here last
week, Baldock said he regarded
plan No, l as the best irom tne
standpoint of both traffic move
ment and costs.
The group present last night
numbering about 50, voted vlr
tually unanimously in opposi
tion to one-way travel on Main,
and indicated a desire for a
study by the engineers of pos
sible plans wnicn woum not re
quire one-way traffic. The opin

harmful to business on Main
street.
One suggestion was made that
highway No, 87, on its routes
through town, be divided sim
ply by making one route north
bound and the other southbound,
without restricting travel to one
way. Resolution Presented
After the meeting at the cham
ber of commerce, whloh was
presided over by Paul Skeen,
the group went to the. city hall
and presented Its resolution to
the city planning commission
and council, in Joint session
there. '
In the ensuing discussion, it
was proposed that state highway
engineers be Invited to come to
Klamath again for a general
meeting of all Interested per
sons for a discussion of cross
city traffic plans. Bert Igl,
chairman of the planning com
mission, said he would suggest
such a meeting to the engineers,
end in cooperation with The
Herald and News would give it
ample publicity so all persons
who wish may be present.
The meeting last night was
not sponsored by any organlza.
tlon. Skeen, who Is president of
the Klamath Merchants associ
ation, said he was asked by sev
eral persons to call such a meet
ing, and finally did so, with
word passed along the street In
formally. Civil Case
